where to cruise this summer

Hi all,

last summer I spent a week on my trailer sailer (Capecutter19) with my boys (aged 8 and 5) cruising around St malo. It was perfect - short sails between beaches, able to find plenty of places to moor for the night (marinas in the main), sheltered sailing and great scenery.

For this summer I am looking for somewhere similar. The current thinking is Falmouth harbour. Looks to have similar attributes.

My question to you all is: am I right?! Does anyone have any experience of sailing around there? Also any comments as to where to stay, as this year I want to hire a small cottage/flat or something as there'll be a few more people and we won't all fit on the Capecutter!

I've also thought of taking the ferry to Santander - is that a good cruising ground?

Any other suggestions for a place for a week, 10 days cruise, suitable for two boys a year older, will be gratefully received!

Thanks,

David

Falmouth itself is a bit drab but the waters around there would be ideal for a week or so. Plenty of places to visit, in comparative safety. The only thing that Falmouth has to offer is the new Maritme Museum, which the kids (all three of you!) will enjoy.

Personally, I wouldn't stay in Falmouth, but there are several places in the area which would serve as a good base.

If you do go there do also try to visit the Helford for a couple of days.

Joe

How about the West of Ireland - plenty of sheltered bays, great scenery, hundreds of cottages to rent and not forgetting Guinness with oysters.
Or - West of Scotland - as above but with single malt whisky.

The West of Scotland is fantastic and there is a huge variety of different kinds of cruising with breathtaking scenery, stunning anchorages etc. If you would like more detail of cruising areas, launching sites etc, then PM me.

David,

If you want to be confident of better than UK weather why not think of the Golfe du Morbihan on the Brittany West coast. It is the most stunning cruising ground, ideal for small boats (the tides are a bit strong in the main stream but you get used to that) and you have the advantage of French culture and lifestyle apres' sail. Rent a gite. We spent two months on board in that area last summer and would highly recommend it. If you don't want to trail your own boat there is a small yacht hire business at Vannes Marina. Have a great time whatever you do.

You could spend weeks around Falmouth and not see it all. There are some nice places I've seen for rent on the Roseland peninsula near St Mawes with water frontage, beautiful area and well sheltered. I no longer have the brochures but a internet trawl should produce some results.

Or...

...Not quite Morbihan, but Port de la Foret/Concarneau. The area's got lots going for it, and compared to Falmouth, good food. Ferry to St Malo and about a five hour tow. Might be less driving via Roscoff? Lots of local coves, easily accessible by sea, more difficult by road, big marina to park the boat. Did it once with a Wanderer dinghy which we parked at a local sailing school.

Re: Or...

Yes Concarneau area also lovely - only a short trip across to the Odet river - and upstream there are the most GLORIOUS anchorages. And of course quick access to Isles Glenan - heaven!

All of those places mentioned are really great. Loved Falmouth, great sailing everywhere-just very dependent on the weather, can be grim in the mist and rain. Great coves etc, Helford river yes + St Anthony's just round the corner. They have cottages to hire right at the end of the cove + dinghy's for hire.I have details somewhere! Also not far from Scillies which are absolutley brilliant - weather again.
Anywhere on that Brittany coast is exceptional. All the way down to La Rochelle which is where we are wintering. L'Aberwach, Cameret, Douanenez all interesting and accessible. Benodet, isles glenan, good. Gulf Morbihan and outlying islands brilliant etc the list is endless. We started 4 years and whilst ryannair provide, it will be some time before we come back! Best of Luck

Thank you all for your replies. For various reasons I won't be going to France, and so it looks like Falmouth it is. Plenty of positive comments - but yes, very weather dependent!

Edward, if you have details on the cottages that would be great - my internet searches have yet to throw up much.

thanks,

David
