I want to buy some thick rope about an inch and a half or two inches in diameter.
This is for a rubbing strake around a traditional clinker dingy. All of the chandlers
only have the usual yacht type ropes.
can anyone help.? I need about 15 metres.

paul cooper.

If you're based in the Solent area, try The Chandlery Barge at Bursledon. I got some there last year. Can't remember what it cost but it was something like 20 quid for an 8 ft dinghy.

Many have said it before, but if people filled in their profile to give some indication of where they either live or where their boat is moored, then perhaps we could give more specific guidance as to where they may be able to purchase things or get advice from.

If he is in Cornwall, then MacSalvors of Pool, Camborne have big sized rope - some very big.

p.s. personally, I don't care who knows where I reside or where my boat is, or what I did and do now.

Of course. I just hope that smear on the side of your containership isn't a yacht! (only kidding Phillip)

I've heard of the Chandlery Barge. Where in Bursledon is it? Am I right that it specialises in secondhand stuff?

I was only a mere electrical officer on the containerships, so wasn't involved in any navigation work.

One of the worst places for dodging fishing boats was south of Sri Lanka. They came at the ship from any side, and only turned to go behind at the last moment. There were a few bum pinching moments up on the bridge at these times!!

I am glad to now be retired and play around in my own boat.

When your electrics don't work there is no such thing as a 'mere electrical officer'. See my posting elsewhere on vhf ariels!

Thank you. But that is the way we were often looked upon by both the deck and engine officers.

I have just had a look at two old/spare VHF GRP whip aerials. Both read continuity - zero Ohms plus the resistance of the coax lead, about 0.1 to 0.2 Ohms.

I am sure though, that the whip at the top of the mast read open circuit. Perhaps I will check it next time I am on the boat.

Easy, on the East Coast

Go and see Des Pawson in Wherstead Road, Ipswich. Des is a professional ropework and knot expert, who has written probably the best book on the subject. He carries huge stocks of "proper" rope, including several sizes of coir for fenders such as you describe. He will teach you how to make a bow fender if you wish. Or he will make and fit a fender to your boat, or he will just sell you the rope.

An exceptionally nice chap, known to my son as "Gandalf" (you will see why when you meet him)

No internet. But ring 01473 690090. There is always a possibility that he may be at a Convention or a Festival of the Sea somewhere, from the States to Australia; if so, try again later.

Phillip,

My first watch as temporary 3rd mate (I was a cadet) was around the southern tip of Sri Lanka at night. The fishing boats you refer to switch on a light when they are about 100 ft away. If the guy who was on my stbd bow when he switched his light on is reading this I apologise for any inconvenience. His mate switched his light on on the port bow at the same time, hope they could both swim! This was 1980 on a Bank boat returning from the South Pacific with the usual cargo of coconuts and palm oil for Lever Brothers.

Regards..................Andrew
