Ill be quite blunt here I begrudge giving an agent 10 per cent to sell my boats, I would like to have a go at selling it myself, are there any sites guys were owners can advertise there boats for sale, as opposed to agents/brokers. thanks so much, Karen

Selling the boat yourself does not necessarily get you the best net price. Most difficult thing for private sellers is getting exposure as the main listing sites are not open to private sellers. Apollo Duck is the site that gives most exposure for private sellers but there is an awful lot of dross on there.

If it is a reasonable value, modern well known boat in good nick then you will almost certainly get a better net price (after commission) and an easier sale through a broker - that is why they exist. Many buyers, particularly of higher value boats prefer to deal with a broker rather than the owner because of the structured and secure way of handling the paperwork and money.

Remember you are not "giving" him/her a share of a finite and predictable amount of money - you are paying for a professional service to get you the best price and quickest sale.

Assuming the boat is worth under, say, 50k, I've had decent success with eBay.

All the other sites and using a broker have just resulted in hassle but no sale.

We have sold four of our five previous boats privately and secured the sort of prices we were looking for. It is important that you understand the process and are able to provide the right paperwork - sale contract and Bill of Sale. The RYA have some available to members and the MCA Bill of Sale is available online.

Last time we used both Boats and Outboards and Yachtmarket, both of which get good coverage although we actually sold via an ad on the Sealine Forum..

Your own advert on apolloduck and ebay. costs peanuts and nothing to lose. brokers = cut of profit for the same you can do yourself. Would you advertise your car yourself or sell it to webuyanycar con men???

Independent selling requires some independent thinking and marketing nuance …

Boats plural? Jumble sale?!

I sold my last boat via a free ad on Boatsandoutboards. Very easy process and I also bought my current boat from a private seller on findafishingboat.

Why do you call them "con men"? They are a well advertised business that one can use or not use.
Costs are made clear at point of actual sale & cheques do not bounce - at least that I am aware of.
Or is a natural dislike of a successfull profit making business, based on a "hard sell" policy

I think that the 'con' with we buy any car is that they try and chip the price down further by a few hundred quid from the price they originally offered ,when you actually bring the car in and they get to inspect it's actual condition.

Not a con as such IMO,but annoying none the less, but should be expected when selling a car to the trade.

Sold our last boat in 5 days. Used eBay and Apollo duck. Very cheap. Duck is best I think, categories are clearer. Made a profit.

I call them that because I have my own opinion. That's all. Perhaps also then public who sell to them are "lacking". Are willing to lose money compared to the effort of selling private just because of the "faff". Its like the old " better deal using part-ex" cobblers. Sheep and brainwash. My opinion.

The brokers have a living to make and at the higher end of the market it can mean that to those to whom their time really does mean money, it is well worth letting somebody else micro manage any purchase or sale.
There still remain those who are comfortable negociating directly with any prospective buyer or seller.
A simple trade off between a fast sale/purchase and the risks that go with it or paying a not outrageous amount for somebody to help the deal along.
You pays your money and takes your choice.

Why are they con men.... Well because they give you a price then you take it to the Bloke in real life and the price becomes less.... Further the whole Get your price in 30 seconds is a total lie and a con.

Use them if you will
