Set in the North Carolina swamps (Norfolk Broads on steroids). A preteen girl is abandoned by her parents in their shack. But she has a small boat with an outboard with which she explores the swamps and becomes an aclaimed naturalist.
Probably the best book I have read this year. It has survival, coming of age, abusive families as well as abuse of women. She lives on grits (cornmeal porridge) oysters and mussels. And to top it all a murder or was it an accident? A really great surprise at the end and one or two throughout the body of the book. I had a job to do before Chapter 36 and was in tenterhooks to find out what happened and was surprised to find it wasn't what I thought.

This Delia Owens first work of fiction being known herself as a writer of nature books
