Where should we put our instruments

One big advantage with the hinged door idea is that I can see the instruments from the inside... check the wind speed, program a new course etc before pulling up the anchor and heading off.

I did consider mounting them in the toilet door!!. When its opened it pretty much covers the companion way?

The thing to remember about the cockpit bulkhead is where people sit. There's nothing worse than having the instrument but not being able to see it because the crew are huddled up against the bulkhead to keep out of the wind and rain.

Yes, this is a complete pain and all the boats I have owned have had the instruments fitted to the bulkhead.

Might I suggest that in a housing above the hatch garage would be far better but the best of the lot would be having the log and sounder just under the gooseneck: right in the direction that you'll spend plenty of your time looking.

For cruising, it's a good idea to allow the non-helming crew to see as much information as possible. More fun, and more sensible - especially when the skipper/navigator may very well not be at the helm. (You do allow the others to have a go sometimes, don't you?)
