Where Shall I put My TV

With all these posts saying that radar, plotter and a whole fleet of instruments should be at the helm so that they can be constantly admired or shown off to others, I need some advice.

It seems to me that I should place the TV there too in a waterproof box so that the helm can watch their favourite movies while underway. What does the forum think?

Would a monitor be better so that electronic books could be read as well - perhaps the relevant sailing directions and light lists?

Also, need advice as to where to find a waterproof DVD player so the movie can be changed without going below?

Do you think that the autopilot will be grateful or will it continue to maintain its rude silent superior stance?

Thanks in advance.

John

KISS answer

If you have a big enough boat with a big enough crew you could get them to act out stuff for you, therefore saving on electricity. Of course, whether your nerves could stand a day or three at sea with a lot of raging actors is another matter.

Speaking personally, I much prefer to have the Television in the cockpit just adjacent to the toaster and the Electric Kettle. This saves an awful lot of wasted trips to the galley.
The TV remote control does have a tendency to go walkies, so we tie it to the ensign staff with a long line, but not so long it falls in the water.
Again, in our case, as we have the benefit of 2 steering positions (port/stbd as against in and out) as such we have 2 autopilots. There is a definate advantage to this set up, it keeps them on their mettle as they hate it when the other one gets used. If they do get a bit uppity we put the front cover on and let them fester a while.
Hope this advice is of some use...

Ask TCM, he can change one of the displays at the helm to be able to watch DVDs, but apparently when he does it seems to mess up his engines /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Have the TV down below, (the aerial goes at the masthead) choose one with a nice big flat screen and use the whole of the bulkhead forward of the saloon to fix it to. Then set up speakers in all four corners for the surround-sound. Turn the volume up enough for the neighbouring boats to hear what you are watching, and then sell tickets. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif
HWMBO was asking at the Boat Show about surround sound, but the spotty yoof we asked knew nothing; except go and ask at Dixons. Which we didn't.

Why not take advantage of all that empty sail space and buy a home cinema projector and have a huge picture on your sail?

They've come down a lot in price and at anchor you could charge others to raft up and watch films, a sort of sail-in movie.

For surround sound on a boat you're probably better off getting pc speakers as they tend not to be as cumbersome as the home cinema stuff, and more than adequate, assuming your cabin is smaller than your living room.

Re: Git!

Harumph!

But yes, the radar can play dvd's. Quite good on v long boring trips over open sea when there's sod all around - but need another monitor to put nav and radar on. The dvd changer is down below.

Now I really like the idea of having a home projector to project my movies onto the sail and moving the galley into the cockpit too.

Doing the boiling and cooking in the cockpit would sure help avoid getting run down (don't scoff, has happened, a woman lost her husband and two children here when down below at night making herself a cup of coffee on her watch).

Will I be able to show my dirty pussycat movies on the sail, I wonder?
