After retiring in 1995 my wife and I lived aboard at the Ashley Marina in Charleston SC for several winters, returning each summer to our home port of Toronto. The old city of Charleston is a great place. The flowers bloom all winter, and it snows about once in ten years. We found the monthly winter rates manageable. There were others who lived aboard all year. Friends lived aboard for one winter (or more) at the town dock in Beaufort NC, also a good town. The rates are lower than Charleston, but it is somewhat colder and the water pipes sometimes freeze.

Ashley Marina phone 843 722 1996. It's located on the Ashley River, just upstream from a fixed bridge with clearance of 55 feet. For sailboats with taller masts the nearest alternative, also good, is City Marina phone 843 577 7702, located just downstream from the bridge.
