I suspect the Colne must be the only East Coast river with such a railway running right next to it...

The railway line is set back a bit so you can see the line from some bits of the Crouch but it doesn't run right next to the sea wall like the OP's photo
I did overlook that some of the line from London to shoeburyness runs next to the shore (insert smiley as I couldn't get the to work)

I guess the Colne is the closest to the railway - unless Roger argues the Thames is (at Leigh)
Not much of a sea wall at the image - hence the barrier at Wivenhoe of course to protect Colchester. I wonder if the '53 floods hit Colchester.

I think they did. Some of the old folk at WSC remember it well and it crops up in conversation from time to time. If you drop in a Sunday lunchtime they will be there.

Wivenhoe certainly; it's barely knee high from an average spring. I was thinking about the Hythe. That must have been at risk.

It was higher up that I was referring to. Googling doesn't help much but someone describes 'minor flooding' at Colchestrer, presumably because the housing wasn't on the flood plain.

Quite. In '53 there was virtually no housing around the Hythe I suppose. But of course the Colne wraps round Colchester.
