I know where sponsons, chines, spray rails etc...etc... are,

where is the Gunnel?

Is it the fender band where hull meets deck?

The gunwales (gunnels) are the top edge of the side of your boat. The top side aisles if you will. At least I think thats where they are! Someone will correct me if not!

Agreed. Gunwhale is the top edge of the hull. The lowest part that spray/waves have to jump over if they are going to wet your deck. Not the point where hull mould meets deck mould

It's the classy bit of teak, that the rails are fixed to.

and keeping them smart is a chore.

Anyone who has been dinghy sailing will have graphic descriptions of the location of this part of the boat and what it does to your anatomy.
Sitting on it for too long in the damp produces a nasty itching sensation known as " gunwale bum".
