The "booby" trap was supposed to link to a pontoon for setting down and picking up also to give access to Millport Pier however I believe the previous owner of Wee Cumbrae and other "worthies" deemed it a hazard and had the pontoon removed

Yes but Grajan1 beat you to it by less than a minute.

Would the pier have anything to do with marine biological research by any chance? I do recognise the background but it's an unusual perspective.

Close but it's the other one.

Well its a long time ago..1985..but I have raced round Cumbrae in a Wayfarer...4th in class. Raced up and down the next day in Wayfarer (1st Lord Provosts Trophy). Been ejected from a Laser 2 when the tiller snapped in full flight. And we bicycled round Cumbrae that week as well, and went to the marine station where we met an Octopus (or was it a squid..its a long time ago).

The last time I was there was 1997 on the HM Bark Endeavour where we spent the night anchored at Hunterston.

And I still didn't recognise the photo...Doh!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

As Grajan1 stated "The "booby" trap was supposed to link to a pontoon for setting down and picking up also to give access to Millport Pier"
It is indeed MILLPORT PIER. The island in the background is Wee Cumbrae. It was taken from the shoreline/prom on Tuesday.
