where is everybody?!

Half way along the Kiel canal, moored to some huge tree trunk-piles.
We thought we could get out of the Elbe tomorrow before the west winds set in, but had not bargained for some nasty stuff this afternoon just when we would be emerging from the canal to get to Cuxhaven, so we are snugged up here while that blows over, and will try for Cuxhaven tomorrow. We expect to be there for a few days. I have 6 independent weather forecasts (German, Danish, Swedish, Met office, GFS(wind guru) and Dutch) and when they all agree, then you are pretty sure it will happen. Up to now (excluding most of may which was horrible) we have had super weather, so I should not be feeling so frustrated!

Stuck indoors recovering from eye surgery. Wife has forbidden me from going anywhere near the boat. So don't feel to despondent.

Mind you, if this operation (artificial cornea implant) works I may no longer be a 'Blind sailor'.

Plenty of summer left to go out and play

Steve

Wishing you the very best outcome. We took the boat up to Gallions on Thursday & left her there. Intend to resume Thames cruise next week after armageddon !

Made Eastbourne yesterday 9 hrs from Fecamp and left reefs in for whole trip. Leaving Fecamp with a large swell running was interesting. A watchful eye on the depth but in the troughs had a couple of metres below the keel. We delayed departure as the 6 that had been blowing all night had not given up as forecasted. I think the weather was about 4 hrs delayed as we saw nothing less than 5 all day.
Tucked up in Sovereign well sheltered but even surrounded by buildings we are getting 35kn. It looks horrible out in the bay, lifeboat was out and about and watching it disappear in the waves just offshore amply demonstrated the size of swell.

What's the hold up with commissioning, if it's not too painful to share?!

I specified the boat with Duradeck (Bavaria's faux teak). Bavaria managed to "forget" to fit the Duradeck on the side decks, so shipped the boat to the UK with a pallet on the low-loader containing all the required panels, for the dealer to retrofit at Bavaria's cost. The dealer said it would add, at most, a week to the 7-10 day commissioning period. The fitting of the deck panels didn't start for 2 weeks, by which time the panels had warped and were difficult to fit to the deck. The fitter said he was going to drill multiple holes in the foam-cored fibreglass deck to hold the panels down while the glue set. At that point, I got very concerned and got a surveyor involved. He said no way should you drill into the deck, and agreed with me that the panels were not fit for purpose. All this is complicated by Bavaria now being on August shutdown. Anyway, I'm now going to take the boat away and the dealer will have to get a new set of Duradeck and pay to have it installed locally in Suffolk. On top of all this, there are repeated silly delays in supplying and fitting other bits of equipment I've specified. Not a happy bunny, which I should be when I'm getting a brand new boat.

I don't think your experience of new boat buying is unusual. A good friend of mine is working his way through the snagging on £1.3m worth of new boat. The builder is being driven bonkers by the electronics suppliers, it has lots of really complicated systems installed that have teething problems but it's worth the pain when it's sailing - wow!

Hope it gets sorted ASAP and hopefully keep some decent weather late into the year for you.

I vowed we would never buy another new boat. Took 2 years to sort out Full Circle. I had to fit a bent coathanger in my gob to keep me smiling.

Our experience of buying a new boat was perfect.

She stayed for a couple of months in the Baltic after launch (for tax reasons) and we found things had been improved well after we had accepted her. For example, they improved the main sheet and back stay tensioning systems. We went back to visit them a year later, and several other things were improved, they sent a couple of guys to England to replace a defective window 2 years after launch, and we have just (3 years after launch) had some other things replaced (defective solar panel and a stanchion that we bent).

The secret is to buy direct from the manufacturer and build up a relationship with them. A dealer will never be as helpful!
