Last year took a week off and cruised down the coast from Portsmouth covering Weymouth, Torquay, Dartmouth, Brixham.

Despite eating out every night, we only had one really good meal, Pilgrims in Brixham if you’re interested. Not only was the food excellent but the couple who I assume own and run the business constantly argued with each other which added to the enjoyment.

Probably doing a similar trip this year, hope to get further along though.

Can the distinguished panel recommend some decent places to eat in walking distance of the normal stopovers?

Yes a very short walk. We mostly eat on the boat. The foods marvelous and I can put my feet up after and watch the telly, or mend an oil leak or do some polishing and cleaning. I could recomend it to any one!!
Other than that You must try captain Jaspers in the Barbican in Plymouth. Chanel 12, Through into Sutton Lock. Turn to Port. It's sort of a drive through. A bit like McDonalds except for boats!! The King Of Prusia in Fowey, Not posh but the foods ok. The New Inn in Turnchaple Or the Boringdon Arms.

If you stop over in the poole area, Bankes Arms Hotel, Studland bay good grub traditional english fayre, or if you feel adventerous go up the river to Wareham and try the italian on the quay, moor right outside always had good food in there. Or further round call into Lulworth Cove and walk up to the hotel. Best oysters and lobster i ever had. Then call into the Country Wines shop across the way, If you can make wine from it they sell it

Ye but trouble is. They dont sell wine thats made from anything drinkable. Beer wine I can cope with or Whiskey wine's Ok but Rubbarb and custard wine or potatoe and cabbage just dont do it for me!! Lulwoth coves a brilliant place though. I cant knock that.

If feeling adventurous, crawl up the Exeter canal from Turf locks on the Exe Estuary. This is a nice easy trip for anyone with an airdraft less than 30 ft or so. The canal can support vessels with a draft of 8 or nine feet I think (but check this first!)

The canal basin is quite attractive and they have recently started allowing people to sleep on board (previously prohibited by some arse at the council to stop liveaboards)

Once here try the Royal Clarence on the Catherdral Green. It is superb. Mad Megs, in what was once a dungeon does pretty good ribs. The Ship (Sir Francis Drake's favourite watering hole apparently) does a good burger upstairs and Bar Venezia right on the key does good pizzas.

And no... I don't work for the tourist board, but I am keen to see people start using the canal more.

And hey I'll even buy you a beer

Regards,

Nick

In Brixham try the Yacht club, food is good and the view superb, also the Royal Dart YC on the Kingswear side is very good. Both places welcome visitors.

I had lengthy discusions with a lovely girl at the canal office last year.. After two or three phone calls she just happened to say. "You cant sleep here, Not even the navy are aloud to do that" So I did'nt bother.

Lady at Canal office is great.. Council are w*****s. But have just changed policy according to Alan Caig, who is Head of Leisure and Museums for the city.

People have been sleeping on their boats for years and they seem to turn a blind eye..

Its still worth the trip I think and it makes a great cheap winter layup.

Ok. Might give it another try this summer. Lady in office did her best, but not much good going all the way up there if you cant stop. No wonder the canal was doing badly.
