Morning

I have been looking around for a dinghy and outboard as a mooringto shore boat. I have a small inflatable but it won't cope with crew and bags. I can only afford second hand!

Surprisingly I can't seem to find anything on e bay or gumtree. My club may come up with something but initial enquiries have not resulted in any leads.

Maybe the start of spring will wake things up a bit but i wondered where do you buy yours?

Shepperton? They have a good source of outboard spark plugs there so might be a local source of second hand outboards. Have always found them most helpful (no connection)

Tidemill Woodbridge always a has a selection as sometimes does Andy Seedhouse of the same . Also Seamark Nunn near Ipswich...?

DOH...Ive just seen where you are...those Ive listed as well as not being local seem to sell (apart from Seedhouse) predominantly inflatables...sorry

It's a more than valid question and rather vexing when you're looking for some kit. I was looking around too and the boats available are either fairly large workboat/fishing boats or rather small. cramped, GRP bathtubs which don't look like they'd row at all well. To be honest, the best looking designs are the ply lapstrake designs from Stanley Smallcraft. If they were sheathed in cloth and epoxy they should be pretty durable, if heavier than ideal.

I used to use a dinghy that was left in the garden of my first house when I moved in. Being rather flat bottomed with a round bilge it had no directional stability. That wastes energy when rowing and makes for erratic manouvres under outboard. A few roofing slats glued along the keel with No Nails improved things no end, but she was still best heeled over with the outboard offset to compensate when solo - shifting body weight would make minor steering adjustments.

I thought it would be easy to pick something up that could be brought back to life, but perhaps everyone has the same idea.

If a dinghy does not leap out at me I might build one using the stitch and glue method.
I have been looking at plans for a while. Don't know now I missed stanley's. Nice lines and could be a nice sailing dinghy for the kids too.

In the past I've visited the local sailing clubs and searched their For Sale boards. Boats and Outboards website. Search 'Tender' in ebay/sailing. Eventually what you need will come up.

I've bought my last 2 dinghies off this site, the for sale forum, and both were excellent. And my last outboard also came from here, again an excellent engine.

Be patient, there will be more coming onto the market in the spring usually when sailing season starts. Not too much on during winter months. I have bought my 3.1 Mercury and 2.7 Honewave off of E-bay with good results. You could look through E-bay, pre loved, Gumtree (part of E-bay). Always good if seller is not too far away so you can have a squint at it.

+1 Agree best bargains on Gumtree but need to be prepared to view immediately and probably travel fair distance.
