Where do 'sent' PMs get stored?

There's nothing in my 'sent items' box relating to any 'sent' or 'replied to' PMs since last year. Are they not recorded any longer, have I switched them off somehow, or are they ashamed and hiding somewhere discretely?

There is an option to turn off the storage in Settings.
