Where can you cruise from Split?

From mid July onwards me and my boat are going to be parked here http://www.marinafrapa.hr/en/index.htm for 3 weeks.
I know there are hundreds of islands out there to visit but anyone know the area and can advise which places are must do and which are not worth bothering with? An added complication is that we have 4 teenagers on board so whilst swinging on the hook in a deserted bay whilst contemplating the bottom of a wine glass might please me and SWMBO, its not going to go down too well with them. So we need destinations where teenagers can go off and do whatever it is that teenagers do

Hvar. totally gorgeous town and teenagers will love it. you can get a berth, or anchor off the island just outside, stern tied to a rock. Totally goeregous place and if the teenagers don't approve they need a good slap on the legs

Brac is also lovely, just off Split, but is more tranquil

Then those string islands as you get to Dubrovnik are lovely, but quiet.

Finally Dubrovnik itself. Beautiful city. Plenty of fleshpots etc for the teenagers. The main marinas are a taxi ride away but if weahter is ok you can anchor off, opposite the big hotels (Hilton and Argentina, they might be called), sheltered by the big island

Thanks jfm. I already know Hvar and Dubrovnik from my travels around Croatia sur motorbike but I'm not sure we'll get as far as Dubrovnik. Hvar certainly is a buzzing place but I've heard it's jammed with boats in Jul/Aug. Somebody said its better to berth on an adjacent island and catch a water bus to Hvar. Know anything aboutr that?
Just checked out Brac on the net. Thanks for that. Looks nice so we'll visit

1) Kryka water falls if you miss that you missed the best of Sibenik region that is an amazing journey. Hope you find a berth in the Marina Sibenik or if you are lucky Skradin not so far up the channel in Kryka.
2) Vodice is a fun place I have been with disco bar all along. 400 berth Marina so finding a place you think will be easy, but honestly it is not. Next to Vodice is another Marina, Tribunj more private only 2nm away.

I berthed on the island opposite as the Hvar quay was too full. Not much on the island but I
didn't know there was a ferry.

Quite liked Starigrad also on Hvar. Would definitely visit Trogir - you can stay in a marina opposite the old town. Heard thumping music in Rogonzica which is bit further north.

I sympathise with your fine preferences, but don't forget to bring your own wine, or you're likely to contemplate the glass bottom after having thrown the wine overboard...
Just a few miles NW of Marina Frapa, around the islands of Zirje, Kaprije and Zlarin, there are at least a dozen of spots I can think of, without even looking at the map, which would be perfect for such activities...

Otoh, if pleasing your teenager guests is a priority, I agree that Hvar is the best choice.
Though Split is also rather lively (but the marina is awful), as is Trogir - albeit smaller (but with a nicer marina).
The marina in the Pakleni islands, in front of Hvar, is called Palmizana and yes, IIRC they have some water taxis to Hvar.
But I would neither recommend that marina, nor the Hvar harbour itself, for different reasons.
Palmizana is actually very nice, and in a great natural environment, but is normally as crowded as Hvar and has the inconvenience of needing a boat to reach Hvar. Besides, it's in a small island which I don't think could offer a lot to your guests.
Otoh, you would surely please them if you can find a mooring in Hvar. But it might not be a great choice if you like also to have some sleep at night - unless you appreciate both noise and wash.
A nice alternative in Hvar Island is marina Vrboska. It's not very near the town of Hvar because it's in the northern coast, some miles E of Hvar. But both the village and the marina are lovely. To reach Hvar, aside from public bus, you can rent both cars and scooters. Btw, the road is very scenic.

I can second PY recommendation for Krka waterfalls. It takes some time to reach them, because you must cruise very slowly in a long channel surrounded by high rocks, and in the last few miles you must either walk or take a local tourist boat, due to navigation restrictions. But a swim in those waters is worth the effort. Well, it was for myself, swmbo and a couple of friends when we got there - not sure about teenagers...

In that area, another place which is both nice (actually nicer than Hvar, imho) and also pretty lively is Korcula.
Further south, Lastovo is maybe my preferred island of the whole Croatian coast, but not for "whatever it is that teenagers do", I'm afraid.
Oh, and on your way back from there you're not far from Vis and Bisevo.

Ha, ha, that sounds like an Italian talking. Actually, I don't have a very high opinion of Croatian food or wine myself but I find that if you drink enough of the wine you forget about how bad it is.

we have been cruising that area the last 10 years, and these places are certainly worth a visit IMHO
-Mljet Polace (very nice mooring place for overnight, for me one of the best)
-Hvar Vela Garska, this is a nice cove at “tender” distance from Hvar,
Nice for overnight, and at day time many teenager dayboat visitors make the entertainment
-Stari grad Zavala, a very quite cove,
-Brac Pipo, always’s nice for a visit/stay overnight and use the restaurant

More teenager oriented places:
-Bicevo Bleu cave (snorkeling preferably before 12hclock !!) and Vis Green cave, not far away from Bicevo, a cave where you can go inside with a 40ft boat (I am not sure about yours)
-Lopud Sunj, the only sand beach in the area
-Makarska, (not pointed on my map) a very nice coast city,very nice scenery and a good night live for the teenagers. Also a nice and busy beach, many different water sports activity, this is the coast city for the Croats.

-If you make it down to Dubrovnic, there is a nice beach (many teenagers) called Copacabana, in the Dubrovnic suburb called Babin kuk, Opposite to the island Daxa (not pointed on my map)

We are in the Dubrovnic area between 18 and 31 july,
First week of august crossing the adriatic to Vieste Italy
And during the second week we might be in the Hvar-Brac area
So let us know where you are

Just got from our 3rd visit there. The Kornati islands are indeed lovely but might get a boring for some of the crew. Here are some other thoughts...

1. Krka definitely worth a visit, but ACI marina costs are now pretty exhorbitant (£45 for 10m boat). However, there are some lovely spots very near the marina. You can either drop anchor and float around it, or drop & take a line ashore right beside the marina (also a bit more protection from the Bora). Loads of fab gin palaces to watch mooring up.

2. Primosten (on mainland next to Kremik) is great for teens - lots of bars & clubs - & great for adults too with a few lovely quayside restaurants and delish food.

3. Island of Murter, Northern bay protected by 3 islands. Don't stay in the marina - there's a quay outside a fab restaurant - you can stay there for free but eat at the restaurant. It's called "Fabro's", in the far south side of the bay. FANTASTIC FOOD! They were so welcoming, it's quite a contemporary restaurant, specialising fish cooked on salt. They also recommended a sampler starter - oysters, smoked fish, fish pate, yummy. Lots of coffee bars, fun market, so should be stuff to keep kids occupied.

4. Zadar (also on mainland) is a lovely old town worth a visit, with a "sea organ" built into the quay wall.

5. Biograd (on mainland) - lots for teens to do here...waterpark, windsurfing. Plus lovely little town, lots of promenading at night past all the ice cream stalls.

Have a fab time. And if you're on mooring buoys in a Bora, make sure you use TWO lines on the buoy. We had a boat crash beam onto our bow at 3am when his single line broke free (thrown in round the bottom of buoy rather than through the ring). Fortunately we stopped him from crashing into the rocks right behind us :-o
