WHERE CAN I GO

I Have just invested in a lovely Maxum 1700. The problem being is that I live in Warwickshire smack in the middle of the country. My intention for the summer time is to sail from Poole, but for over the winter period and day sailing I would like to find a place somewhat closer to home.
Does anybody know of a book that may point me in the right direction or has anybody got any suggestions about locations.
I am new to this playing about on the water and understand how much I have to learn, so keep it simple, just like me.

You have 2 choices
1) take it to the sea and go fast
2) use it on the river and go slow - Avon, Severn and loads of canals near you.

but a "speedboat" is probably not the best fun on a cold river in Dec
