I had a look at a boat this weekend and I am tempted to make an offer, the thing is, its a bit run down (but its about 15k less than a really nice one). Before I go signing my life away to buy it, I want to put together a guestimate of what it would cost me to have a really good run through the boat and make it more reliable/safe/up to date.

SO, is there a website that I can find a list of prices for items such as

Exhaust hose and clamps
log and echo sounder
GPS (its got a decca!)
pvc hoses and clamps for all water cooling in engine room
fuel hoses
fire extingwishers (new spelling, patent applied for)
a central heater (like webasto)
a colorifier
stern gland seals
bilge pumps

Maybe I should compile a list and give it to my chandler to price? Maybe I should go to a number of people? A one stop shop would be handy, is there one?

Surely that lot will cost you more than 15K. Why not just stump up the money for a better looked after boat with all the kit. Less likely to have something major to replace IMHO.

Hi Ben - most of those things are available for oodles at list price - gut feel would say about £4,000 + the cost of the heating system. Plus of course the time to fit them or find a chap/chapess who can. Surely better bet to save the money and grief and buy newer...

Unless - of course some of the elements can be put off - a sort of rolling / floating restoration, being a Triumph Spitfire owner you'll understand that <G>

Try the Vetus catalogue (www.vetus.co.uk) as well. Doesnt sound like £15k's worth of work to me especially if you do most of it yourself so maybe its a bargain but what else wrong is there that you dont know about?

Has to be there to get to 15K, in my estimate more like 2 - 3 grand and quite a bit less if you really shop around.

An erberspacher ds3 including the fitting kit is approx £1200 - £1400
plus what everyone else has chipped in with.
If your on your boat this W/E pm me, I can bring some catalogues down for all that other stuff.

Rekon you can cover that lot on Less than 3 grand. Pipes, you can get from comercial places for a few quid. The Electronic. You more or less pay as much or as little as you want.

Cheers me dears, opinions pretty much what I thought, would do all the work myself as a self confessed tinkerer of things boaty.

Opition to find a better boat is limited as its a Fairey Fantome and they only built very few, I think several of the better ones that are about have recently found new homes. Fantome has the advantage of being GRP, its a sound boat but all the systems and kit need updating or renewing and the hull needs painting properly (interspray or awlgrip I guess) as its been dun wiv a brush, plus decks need doing.

Gonna do the sums and mull it over for a bit (dont think it will sell too quick as its bin on the market a while), plus, its a big step up from my Huntress, which, lovely as it is (and probly one of the best even if I say so myself) I am already finding her a bit small.

I'd be happy to do it as a rolling restoration basis, bit like my first spitfire but that was a reverse restoration as it was falling to bits slowly (quite fast in places), maybe I should sell the duke, the spit, some of the lambrettas and my granny....
