WHERE can I get an awning made or buy the fabric?

Hello, can anyone out there recommend a supplier for making me an awning (just a rectangle) to fit over the boom - like a tent. I live in Nottingham.
I have a domestic sewing machine aboard, so could make one if I had to. So I would also need to know where to buy the canvas. I expect canvas is the best fabric? I have heard of Sunbrella. My boat is in Italy, and gets a lot of sun. Wondered if I needed a camping supplier?

Thanks, members, for the tips on cleaning and waterproofing. Invaluable.

Thanks.

Lady C

Point North will supply the materials, thread, eyelets and 304 other items you didn't know existed or that you might need them. Acrylic canvas is the stuff to look for, coated or uncoated, although uncoated is easier to sew and plenty waterproof enough. Sunbrella is just a tradename for a type of acrylic canvas and will cost a lot more £$€ for basically the same stuff. The Point North stuff is UV resistant and just the job for your purpose.

+1. Point North understand the business of out door fabrics. Tell them what you want the fabric to do and they will recommend which one to go for. No connection etc, just a satisfied repeat customer!

Yes, the Point North manager is 'bend over backwards' at being helpful. Superb reputation for products, pricing, delivery and the very best of CS and sound advice. I don't say that often.....!

I've just been in touch with Hawke House about fabrics. They often seem to be recommended on here. I was enquiring about suitable fabrics for repairing a stack pack and making some dodgers

Coated nylon will degrade with UV after a period of time if used continually .Id give it two seasons max..You would be able to sew it more easily than acrylic canvas with your domestic machine though .

I am also in Italy, last year I made a complete new set of cockpit, mizzen sail, and sundry covers for my Nic38.
I bought everything, Sunbrella, tapes, zips, clips etc all from a USA company 'Sailrite' had so much support from them, they also have on their site something like a 1000 'how to' videos, which having never sewn a button on before was a great help.
The vids are available whether you buy from them or not.
I bought a machine on e-bay from the 'sewing machine man' who also advised on the best to use for my purpose, cost 100 pounds.

I suspect the eBay stuff will not resist the UV levels you'll get in Italy. Also, it'll have a tendency to rip more easily than a heavier woven canvas, which will resist wear better. Like all things, you get what you pays for. We used a cotton/polyester mix canvas because it was 2 metres wide and marginally cheaper than acrylic canvas: it's done the job but has faded very quickly in comparison to acrylic canvas.

I am thinking of having a cockpit cover made. The fabric that the existing one is made of appears to be identical to the the stuff which Horse Rugs are made from (i.e Cotton) and if I was looking for someone to make an awning I would see if there is anyone local who makes or repairs horse rugs as they buy this material by the roll.

Hello again,

Just to let you all know that I appreciate your help and advice, and have written for quotes from the companies mentioned. Hope to sort it shortly. Thanks again. LC:encouragement:
