The handle that I use to lift the lid on my underfloor fridge has broken, but I can't find an identical one, I can find similar ones on eBay, but nothing the same. Does anyone know who supplies these type of handles?

Also, how do I remove it? I unscrewed the four screws, expecting it to simply lift out,but it was stuck fast, it feels like it might be stuck down with sealant. I tried levering it up with a screwdriver but that just damages the teak. Any ideas?

Cheers

I expect your diagnosis of mode of sticking down by mastic or glue is correct. So how to lift it without damaging the surround ?

The holes in the corners look to be about 5 or 6mm diameter. So lets assume 5mm.

Obtain some M4 penny washers and a M5 tap. Run the tap through the washer, then grind a chord off one edge of the washer.

Gently pry up one corner and slide the washer in under the screw hole.

Use an M5 bolt to act as a pusher by winding into the now threaded washer. You might need to use more than one of these washers if it is really stuck, but should lift the fitting whilst avoiding pry marks on your teak.

At least this is what I would try.

Then I'd try to get a paint scraper under and use that as a platform for the screwdriver to pry it up

Clever! But the boat is in Mallorca where I have few tools, bolts etc , I can take some bits with me to try that approach but I'm concerned I won't end up taking the correct size bits and pieces with me, and I won't have enough time to trapse around different hardware stores getting the right size bits. Is there a simpler way?

Then? Drill a small hole in the back side of panel and knock it out with a punch, fill hole with dowel.

Some good ideas above. You could use duct tape to protect the surrounding teak then use thin wire as a garotte to slice through the underlying sealant one edge at a time. (I used this method to remove unreplaceable large tiles from a kitchen wall during remodelling.) Alternatively, if the removal process will damage the surrounding surface you might be able to extract the ring and spring from a new latch and retrofit into the old one in situ?

Good ideas there, I have a suspicion I'll be trying all the ideas in this thread to get this problem solved.

Warm it up a good bit first to hopefully soften the glue/sealant

+2

sealant wont be on the top sides only, will also be (I image the bulk of it!) on the recess so the other tricks wont work.
Heat it up with a heat gun A LOT, just take care not to darker/burn the teak. That should do it.

Hmm getting hold of a heat gun is going to be difficult, might have to leave this one to the professionals if that is the case
