I hope one of the assembled experts here can help. I have a B&G masthead unit with a perished o ring that is just beginning to break down so it urgently needs replacing before it fails completely and lets water into the circuit board.

Does anyone know where I can buy a replacement o ring, it is 25mm OD and 1.5mm diameter. Tinley Electronics will sell me one but want £10 + VAT as a minimum order and Mr Google has found me places that will sell me 100+ at a time. Surely there must be somewhere that sells o rings as loose items for a couple of quid?

Any help much appreciated.

People make up nice kits of O rings of all different sizes and sell them on ebay.

A tenner will get most people a lifetime supply.

Thanks!

Many thanks for all the advice, and for Geoff's generous offer, which I have pm'd him about.

This is a great community and one we should all feel proud to contribute to. :)

If you are still in Emsworth'ish, have you tried Emsworth Car and Cycle.. it's just north of the roundabout in Emsworth (or at least it was last time I was there).

They used to have a few display boxes of o-rings of all sizes (metric and imperial)... and they sell them individually for pennies...

and if you're just East of Emsworth you could head to Ford and just call in to...
C&W Seals

The have a huuuuge selection of o-rings in stock (of various different colours and materials).. They might sell you a handful for a couple of pounds..

If you take the old one along they could even measure it exactly first.. Very helpful.

Hi Martin,

Thanks for the advice. Sadly Emsworth Car & Cycle have dropped the "Car" bit and now just do bikes. As with many of these useful type of places they've stopped doing all the interesting and difficult to source bits and bobs and now just focus on the same mass market pre-packaged stuff as everyone else! :(

Reminds me of when I went into all the "chandlers" in Cowes wanting an O ring. Only one shop had ever heard of them and had a few knocking around in a cardboard box at the back of the shop.

Stroll into a small hydraulics place - the sort of place that does tractor and plant repairs, and take the old one with you. I'll be surprised if they won't be able to sort you out or charge you more than a quid!

Jim at Harbour Chandlers had a box of various O rings he was selling retail last autumn- had one I needed:)
Screwfix/Machine Mart do a box full of mixed sizes as well.

You will buy a pack of 100, but any size you like.
Not the cheapest, but often the least effort.
If you have an account, the postage is free.

Used them recently, excellent service and easy to use website. Only £1.50 delivery.

[Simply Bearings]

6-yo recently broke the wheels on his scooter, so a an exercise in father/son bonding, I lead him into the garage and:
Clamped the scooter in the vice,
Undid the bolts with a ratchet - with him holding the spanner on the stationary side,
Used an appropriate socket as a drift to bash the old bearings out,
Used my verniers to measure the ID, OD and width,
Fired up the laptop on wi-fi to order online.†

Three days later, we fitted the replacements - on *all* the wheels.

SWMBO was all set to chuck it away and buy a new scooter...

† That's the bit *our* (grand)fathers didn't do.

O-rings: I just bought one of the yellow boxes years ago -I've probably used 5% of them, but like the box of grommets, "You never know when i=they might come in handy"
