I don't even know what it is, er outdoors thinks a camping shop but I have no idea whatsoever.

We only need enough to give an eber a blast.

EDIT... ah Jet A1, fair doos, I used to really love the smell of that. Didn't realise it was the same stuff, learn something new every day.

Any oil merchant or paraffin from a hardware store.

mmm good call, there's an oil merchant on the local Truck industrial estate, I have seen his sign from the motorway. I will mosey on down there and see if he can help me.

Our local village garage still sells paraffin loose from a "pump" ie your own can and a prepaid token in the slot AFAIK .

DIY superstores sell branded pre-packaged products such as "Parasene". That's what I have.

I've got a ton and a bit of "28 Second Kerosene" sitting in my garden. It seems to me to be a bit more viscous than the stuff you describe (remember Esso Blue and Pink Paraffin?) but less viscous than diesel oil.

if you come thru Llan and then go up the A5 to Porth, at Carrog, about 5 miles along, there is a small scruffy garage that has "kerosene" in one of its pumps, about 45p a litre. Yanks called paraffin kerosene, also jet A1 was called kerosene. I made enquiries at the garage and he said it is 28 sec heating oil!
Good enough and near enough to run the eber on, although all my ten years of running ebers, they have always done ok on red diesel with no probs.

Caldo Oils in Ruddlan just off the A55 sell drums of the stuff, and lots of other stuff as well. They supply most of the prepacked stuff to DIY shops in the UK. They will sell retail amounts.

Angus,

Do you know of anyone in our neck of the woods that sells paraffin loose. My local garage used to but changed hands and its "too much hassle" for the new guy. I use it for the greenhouse and for cleaning greasy parts (off engines and the like before everyone else starts sniggering).

Cheers

hmmm? now I am even more confused. I have a gallon of esso blue in the shed, who would have thought it might be the same thing.

I asked about Kerosene after someone posted me this link in another thread and I decided as I was removing my eber to change the glow plug screen I might as well give it a cleaning 'blast' at the same time.

I don't know yet if there is any carbon build up, I am hoping the problem I am starting to notice (the heater will occasionally go through a power down cycle if set under 3 (rheostat)) will go away when I change the screen. I decided it can't do any harm to run it through a carbon clean, might kill some garden weeds at the same time if I do it in the back garden too,.

Esso blue is paraffin, AFAIK - you can still run the Eber on it. Kerosene is commonly available as home heating oil (28 sec kerosene as already pointed out). You (anyone) should be able to buy it from just about any oil merchant. Look for 'Heating oil' in the yellow pages - ring first, and you might have to take your own drum.

2nd recommendation for Caldo - very helful, but I'm sure you can find somewhere more convenient to either home or boat.

Just digressing a bit re kerosene and the Caribbean......
Kerosene is easily available here, and it costs considerably less than petrol per litre - most garages will still sell it from the pump.
This dates back to when everybody had kerosene fuel lanterns, before electricity came along - and this was relatively late in some of the islands. I think that the first power station in Bequia in the Grenadines only happened in the late 60's, or perhaps even early 70's.

And it is a very popular fuel with fishermen, especially as Yamaha make a 40 hp outboard motor that runs on kerosene - many small commercial fishing boats / pirogues in the islands have 2 x 40 hp kerosene O/B's on their transoms.
Here is a bit of info about them on the Yamaha website - http://www.yamaha-motor.co.jp/global/area-marketing/fishery/outboard-motor/index.html
