Where are your speakers mounted?

As the terrible factory fitted speakers have now packed up, we are going to put a couple of speakers in the cockpit.

This will necessitate drilling a couple of holes. We have a twin wheeled southerly 38 and want to know where you have put the speakers?

It seems as if the lockers at the stern, or the steering column are the best options.

Cheers

Mine are both in the cockpit locker. I covered them with a modified dinghy bailer scoop moulding on the inside. This is a splash protection and has survived remarkably well, although both the speakers are tucked into the corners quite well.
I remake the speaker connections each season and put protection on the terminals, they have been there 9 years now, and need replacement this year, as the magnet movement in the speaker is packing up. Always been very succesful for us.
I inserted an external speaker switch next to the hifi so I don't have to keep fiddling with the front rear balance when I don't want the cockpit speakers on.

I have been considering these.

I've no idea how they would sound or if they would be loud enough. The idea is that they vibrate the surface they attach to and that acts as a speaker cone would. I my case I would attach them to the back of the GRP cockpit side below the seats.

But I really like the idea of not making holes in my cockpit, not having unsightly speaker grills and having the drive units well away from the weather and feet.

Does anyone have experience of drivers like these?

Mine are inside the cabin.I've seen many weather proof speakers break up in the sun and I dont want to make rather big holes in the cockpit.

I have had a pair of plastic grilled cockpit speakers for something like 15 years. They are mounted one each side, 6 inch units, like this:

This photo is around 11 years old.
Having been in the Med for the past 10 of those years the plastic grilles became brittle. I patched them up with Milliput a few times but ultimately they became more patch than grille, so I replaced them. Fortunately I managed to buy a pair of metal grilled ones from a forumite on the For Sale pages and after a small amount of filing they went in fine. The sound from both sets has been great (I am an ex bass-player, so appreciate the benefits that a big sounding space can bring). It takes a bit of nerve to cut a 6" hole in each locker but the benefits are worth it.

They are ****e.

That's the reason I'm getting a new set.

The distorted like mad and were all but useless.

Ones packed up totally now after 2 years, and I can't get to it to fix it.

Total waste of money

Ours (inherited on current boat but just had to replace are mounted in the standard beneteau dorade boxes over the stern cabin vents. The original's cones eventully gave in to Florida sun and rain and fell apart.

3 boats back I installed some in the cockpit seats area of our then W33, I found some that promised reduced magnetic interference to compasses, I think they were Alpine make and were 'marine', and therefore expensive. IIRC I tested them near the compass and they were better than standard ones ( I bought a pair of each on sale or return as our compass for the autopilot was close to where I wanted to mount them, the marine ones won hands down) We lived in Poole back then and the local audio specialist ( on Ashley Road) supplied the local Sunseeker factory.

Thanks, that's interesting.

Was the fixing method a factor, were they lose or not properly bonded to the surface?

2 Speakers, one either side of companionway. You can see one to the left of the chart plotter, the right hand one is just out of site.
I bought some stainless metal gauze off ebay to make the speaker cover with having ditched the plastic covers they come with.

As an aside. Anyone recognise where we were?
