Out of interest, I did a little gentle Googling, looking at stripey lighthouses.

One thing that struck me was that all the helical designs that came up twirled in the other direction (clockwise from the top).

Which did lead me to wonder whether this one was an outlier. Is it unlucky to have a widdershins lighthouse?

So it does. There are none coming up. Wonder if Pete's been sneaky. Just in case, does this look familiar?

Haha - it occurred to me! But no, I'm satisfied that Baggywrinkle got in #4 with his google-powered answer

Unfortunately Gravelines is no longer active, I was hoping to check in the List of Lights whether the description includes the direction of the spiral, which would admit the possibility of a choice. I can find another widdershins lighthouse - Tangasseri in Kerala, called "Qullan" in the US list of lights, where it's described: "White round masonry tower, red diagonal stripes;"
