I've noticed that alot of the truly great posters such as Byron etc are no longer frequenting the forum as they did in the old days. What has happened to them, have they died, or are they disollusioned with the forum as I am, too much crap being posted maybe.

Much like this post I suppose!!!!!!!

Missing oldies (or old guard) have been the subject of debate on here for some while now. I think the conclusion was that some forumites were getting bored and/or dissillusioned and perhaps thats just the way of things with forum evolution anyway.

I suppose that there is only so much that goes wrong or so many times you can change you boat. There is some fresh blood coming in now, but they are met with the “Oh no not this again” and get put off.

May be YBW should set up a FAQ or FAP Frequently asked Posts so that Newbies can check there first.

I agree but don't narrow it down too far for there are many questions that are asked and asked and if you were to tell the person posting you know they would have to wade through maybe hundreds of postings to find the answer. It could be that the search on this site is rubbish though.

surely new people coming in and asking the "old" question is not a bad thing - we all have the choice to ignore it - or we could summarise the previous posts. The "look here first" links are a pain in the rear. IMHO.

Its a nice way for people to join in - so be polite and point em in the right direction. FAQ are painful - they never quite "itch" the right spot do they.

ps Can I borrow the keys to your boat as I wanna nick the engine to put in mine. /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

I agree with Lanason on this, you don't want the newbies to be bollocked for daring to repeat a post, same questions being asked is what happens on all forums. The forum will probably go really quiet!

There will be posts like, "so, anyone got anything new to post?"

"Yeah props, what size.....?"

"Nope, done it, go to FAQ! Next"

"Huuuum , my Volvo's are a bit noisy....?"

"Nope! FAQ!"

Anyway, you get my point.....

Also, when you answer someone else who asks a question that has already been asked, the post quite often takes a completely different direction to the old post.

I think a central knowledge base is a good idea, but it is much nicer to chat on forums, much more fun and social.

I know what you mean and wasn't trying to be perscriptive, just an idea based on what has happened to me and what I've seen happen to newbies.

Yes we all should point peeps in the right direction, totally agree, it's just that some don't.

Re the boat -hummm what do ya think I'm going to say -------- did I tell you about my other hobby /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

I was only thinking of a first point of help not a Britanica style knowledge base that would, as you rightly say, kill the forum.

OK - you win - I'll remove the engine for you FOC - might even get into MBM or PBO - the first Diesel to Petrol conversion - Cor look how much I'm now spending on fuel.... Have you got the 280 leg - did you have any probs in connecting to it ??
I'm seriously now planning to convert to D from P. A trip on Solitaire (as seen in your local PBO this month) really got me thinking about it.

Would appear that Byron has gone quiet since he sold the princess.Has a rather nice river launch by all accounts.Seem to recall he has popped up from time to time and bits of news filter through from peeps who live in his area.Definately miss his postings tho.
