We sold our previous yacht last year, have saved some money but now, frustratingly cannnot find a good 2nd hand yacht.
Last season before we had sold we were looking and viewed 3 that we would have been delighted to have bought, but were unable to do so as we had not sold our then yacht.
Since selling we have been searching for an excellent Dehler 34, Sigma 362, Scanmar 345 or Omega 36-there appears to be very few, if any for sale, and those that are are either not up to scratch, overpriced (and not negotiable) or overseas.
We keep checking the magazines and searching the net but still no luck and the season approaches fast.
Hence our question-where are all the good 2nd hand yachts - if you know of the whereabouts of any of our preferred designs, please let us know.
Thankyou.

I was in your position 2 years ago and was impressed with the service and choice offered by Dutch brokers, compared with the indifference from UK ones.Although I did not eventually buy from Holland I regret it as I think I missed a bargain.Look at www.devalk.nl for instance. Good luck.

Two of the boats you are looking at are very rare in this country. There can't be more than a handful each of Scanmar 345s and Omega 36s. Dehler 34s are a bit more plentiful but still not that common. You should find a reasonable database of Sigma 36s and 362s, but of course many of them will have been raced hard or used as school boats. The Sigma is a very good boat but I am not sure they were really built to endure the hard life that some were subject too.

You may well find Dehlers more plentiful in Holland and, particularly their home country, Germany. Scanmars were only sold in numbers in Sweden, and the same applies to the Omega.

If you do not fancy ringing round oversseas brokers yourself, one of the larger UK brokers with an international business will be able to do a search for you (for a fee, of course). You could try Williams Smithells or Michael Schmidt at Hamble Point, Clark and Carter at Burnham or Levington (near Harwich), or, for Dehlers, Dehler Yachts UK also at Hamble Point.

In my opinion market forces determine prices and having rejected boats that don't come up to spec but which are otherwise affordable, you're left with boats that do come up to spec but which you claim are overpriced and non-negotiable. Hmmmm maybe you should think on that one! Maybe what you're saying is the boat in the condition you like and with the spec you want - isn't affordable as distinct to being overpriced?

This isn't criticism, I've been there too but I'm philosophical and now realise people treating their boat with respect and tlc and upgrades are entitled to expect a higher price for their boat than a similiar model which has been well used and requires expensive upgrades.

I looked at a Scanmar 345 in December at Levington Ipswich, Clarke & Carter. Not because I particularly wanted to but because the broker pushed me to, cause they couldn't sell it. Nice boat.

I did buy in Holland, a Dehler 36 CWS. I bought privately in the end having found it at www.botenbank.nl . I think prices are about 10% less and having looked in France as well I think the UK market could drop if prices level off. There are odd wrinkles such as use both UK and Dutch bills of sale, Dutch people are surprised if you want a survey etc. Had no real problems except that she needed a new rudder and Dehler were absolutely terrible in their indifference to time etc. Bought her on Sept 11th and got her home on Jan 12th.
