Finally! after a bit of a hiccup sunday evening when it turned out I hadn't de-crapped the petrol tank as well as I thought I had...we had a brief trouble-free splash around the middle of Portsmouth harbour, and the next plan is an all day trip out next Weds or Thurs.
However, and I realise that perhaps this is better suited to a fishing forum, but WTF, you guys won't mind-SWMBO is DESPERATE to catch a fish..and I haven't got the first clue (two types I know-with or without batter...)where would you fishy types head for, what would you put on the hook, and are any of you around next week, weather permitting, to perhaps offer some guidance? We'll b departing Gosport, so the Solent's our oyster, so to speak /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You just need some mackeral feathers at this time of year

Oh and a large weight

Long weight

and a long wait /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Right, you are in The Solent.

Your best bet is mackeral, they have just started to arrive in numbers but still a bit patchy.

From Gosport, the marks near you are the Forts, around HW slack. Drift around them, with engine in neutral, with mackeral feathers. Chuck the feathers over the side with a weight and let them drop to 10-20' down and then jig them up and down with a full sweep of the rod. Continue until fish caught.

If you haven't got the tackle PM me and I'll set you in the direction of a tackle dealer.

we were sorting out the final bits and bobs on the trailer at Lymington ready to set off for our accident last Sunday at about 5pm and about 6 very successful anglers were unloading and I couldn't believe their catch.. they loaded up several sacks of prime codling, they must have caught 50 fish between them with some sacks taking two people to lift out the boat... haven't a clue where their mark was and I'm guessing they'd have not told me if I'd asked but it was certainly an impressive catch.

We were halfway between Hayling and the Nab tower on Sunday afternoon.

Amazing number of mackerel - with one rod landed 24 within an hour - it was just cast-off and reel'm in /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The shiny things with the mini-squid (rubber) seem to work best

If you get bored of mackerel, have a nose around here for how to's on catching other stuff. http://www.worldseafishing.com/

Although most other things will require bait etc... which is the best thing about mackerel feathers, you don't need anything else.

Prepare your boat to be generally shat on from all directions if you bring up a string (more than one at the same time), messy little buggers, have a big bucket to hand! Oh and an old towel is always handy to hold them with.

Worth noting, if you hold them with your hands and put them back they will die. (oil from your skin acts like acid), so if your going to put them back (small ones etc...) hold the top of the hook and give it a flick above the water, they usually come straight off with little damage (use pliers to hold teh hook if your nervous of handling fish)

Worth heading and gutting them at sea also, saves el' of a mess at home!

Most Codling and Pollock brought in to Lymington are cought south of the needles, eanywhere from 500YDS to 50 Miles+ South, Plenty of "wreck" Charters about if it's what floats your boat!

Finally don't catch more than you can eat that day, waste of time freezing them, there 100% better fresh and easy to catch in summer.

Absolutely! How big is the FEZ around your boat these days?

FEZ = fish exclusion zone /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Thanks for the pointers guys, feel a lot more knowledgeable now. Hope that next Thursday will bring more success-in fact, I'm so confident I will pack a bucket and old towel /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

If you should want to drag yourself to Gosport to hold a masterclass in Mackerel catching, SWMBO will welcome you with open arms!

Two offers in as many days (See Scuttlebutt)

As you may have gathered, whilst I am a complete stud between the sheets, my fishing skills are not exactly honed to the same degree.

But, a line with a few feathers should have you hauling them in. Remember, when gutting them, to remove the very thin black membrane that lines the stomach cavity as it is this that gives the normally beautiful tasting Mackerel a bitter taste.
