Where are the anodes on Yanmar 2GMF?

I've an old Yanmar 2GMF. Can anyone tell me where the anodes are on it please. I've seen a couple of replies in previous threads but they haven't helped me locate it/them.
 
It is a raw water cooled engine not a freshwater cooled one?

If so look at the RH diagram on page 1-13 HERE
It is part #28 at the back of the cylinder head.

sorry not very clear but the best i can do at the mo.

I think there are 2, one on the rear of the engine above the gearbox, looks like a large nut. And I think there is another on the side of the block, same side as the dipstick.
 
The 2GM20F is freshwater cooled, that's what the F stands for. It doesn't need anodes on the engine any more than a car engine does, because of the anti-corrosive properties of the antifreeze. The sea water only passes through the copper matrix of the heat exchanger and then out through the exhaust so no anodes are needed, or fitted to the best of my knowledge.

Absolutely right and it says so on page 163 of my link above ! :eek:

And no mention of an anode in the heat exchanger.

Thanks very much for all the feedback.

My engine is the freshwater version as has been pointed out on this thread.

I suspected there were no anodes in my engine BUT..... I did the RYA diesel engine course the other weekend and the guy taking it said, "ALL diesel marine engines have anodes fitted, people who say they don't have them on their engine just can't find them", so I've been looking ever since! BTW the course was excellent and I'd recommend it to anyone.

Thanks VicS for the link to the 66mb workshop manual, I'm really interested in it unfortunately the link says 'the file is damaged and can't be repaired'. :-( Is there another link to it somewhere?

Try starting from http://www.motoren.ath.cx/ Both the manuals I mentioned and an Owners operating manual (0.5MB) in the list.

So much for RYA courses then. Bum info makes it less than excellent in my book. Who knows what else is incorrect.

Often, but by no means always, fresh water cooled engines have an anode in the salt water side of the heat excahnger but there is no need in the freshwater circuit as it can be protected by corrosion inhibitors in the coolant.

My 3GM30F has no anodes, either on the fresh water or sea water sides. My workshop manual shows anodes on the raw water cooled 1,2 and 3 cylinder engines but none on the fresh. The exploded diagram of the heat exchanger does not show any anodes.

So it appears that the Yanmar is one of the ones that doesn't.:)
 
Hi VicS et al,

I'm still not able to d/l the file although I'm getting a new message saying I've exceeded my d/l limit of six files per day! I'll try again tomorrow on a different pc as this may be the cause.

As far as the RYA engine course goes I know it seems wrong what the guy said about anodes but the rest of the course was very useful and informative. I wouldn't want to put anyone else off from doing it because of this one slip. I take your point though about what else could they have wrong but I got a lot out of it and it was well worth attending. :-)
