In the 1948 December issue of Yachting World, as a Design Supplement, the yacht Restive was featured, designed and built for Nigel Warrington Smyth. Restive was also featured in Hiscock's Book, Cruising Under Sail. On the basis of his description, I purchased a "sister-ship" to Restive in Australia in 1996 - Peter Robyn and have enjoyed her ever since. I have since discovered another sister-ship to Restive - Black Cygnet on the Tamar River, U.K. More detail of this story is found on my website: http://pratkins.webs.com and also on the archive's website of Stebbings-Burnham on Crouch, the original builder. http://www.stebbings-archive.net/?p=578. There are amongst us a growing number who would love to hear about the original Restive. We understand that Warrington Smyth owned her for about 17 years. Can anyone give us further information. It would be great to hear from you!

Restive in Canada

This week there has been some good news and the search for Restive has narrowed. It would appear that she is in Vancouver, Canada, after a nine year cruise of the world. This week, I received an email from the archivist at Stebbings with a link to an article that appeared featuring "Adventures in Mast Stepping". http://www.anchoring.com/blog/category/news/ I am currently trying to contact the owner, whose name I believe is Chris.

Some may be aware of a very fine service to yachtsmen involved in circumavigations. YOTREPS pangolin.co.nz. Mike tracks yachts currently at sea. In 2008 he wrote of Restive some interesting facts.

"...(Restive) was moored close by us for much of the time we were in Gibraltar when I got to know her owner;
Chris Van der Schiff quite well. We later met up again at the haul out yard in Los Cristianos in Tenerife (10/July/91). This was when Chris was preparing the boat for the trip to Cape Town. I well remember keeping in touch with him during
the passage and hearing of the trials of maintaining the water supply water from rain showers.

We had one letter from him in South Africa confirming his arrival and later heard that a year or so he'd sailed to French Guyana. We've since lost touch but would like to make contact if your correspondent has the details."

If anyone else has information to share, or knows how to contact Chris, we would love to hear.
