When will we see an end to these Quixotic abominations - Probably when every beautiful wild and expansive vista has been spoiled for ever!

I have coal fired power station outside my front window and an oil one just out of sight,let me know where you live, will personally bring both round brick by brick. :)

I'm amazed by the success of the whispering campaign against wind power. It was David Bellamy who started it; wasn't it?

Thanks but we have our own,although mostly mothballed these days.
We are fortunate of couse because the vast majority of our power comes from Hydro with a contribution from Geothermal, not to say we don't have those dreadful windmill things too.
Although I am glad to say that when they wanted to place some in an area of outstanding beauty the power of the people put the politicians right.
As a Kentish Man or is it Man of Kent you are probably referring to Kingsnorth and Grain? Must say i rather liked the look of them when viewed from my childhood town of Leigh-on-Sea, they made great points of reference;)
The brutal fact of life is that wind generation is not very efficient with figures I have seen quoting at the best 35% and in all probability the average will be in the 20's!
How about utilising the power of the tides?

When I was researching turbine blade shapes with GEC Alsthom in the 90's, they reckoned on between 33 and 40% energy efficiency. That is say 40% of the heat that could be obtained from the fuel became usable electricity.

In the case of a wind turbine, it's rather difficult to measure the quantity of fuel that they consume.

Now as well as useful electricity, a fossil fuel burning power station produces some really nasty bi-products.

But it's this "brutal fact of life" that you are waving about as though it was some final argument - 35% of what???

Where wind energy extraction of 100% efficiency takes all of the kinetic energy out of the wind. That would mean the velocity on the "out" or "leaving" or "exit" would be zero!

You know that is impossible, you asked a question I answered!
I was just trying to highlight the fact that wind generation is hardly the most efficient way of producing power and the byproduct is an ugly array,that in my opinion (am I allowed one?) blots the landscape.

The NIMBIES over here have also managed to stop all the tidal barrage schemes as well.
Most of the opposition always appears to come from the leafy heartlands of England,where the mere suggestion of a new railway/airport/incinerator/reservoir/housing or power plant of any kind provokes the usual Pablovian response.
Classic was the fuss created with a local authority wanted to site a new crematorium near a town. !
