With the latest versions of iTnes, which include the dreaded "Cloud" the late Mr Jobs has left us a very expensive legacy. Want to watch a movie for which you have paid and downloaded and you end up paying for download time every time you want to watch it subsequently even if you originally downloaded it at home. Try to watch it without connecting to the net and it just won't work. Look for the dreaded cloud in the top right corner of the icon list in your movie library. Also, if you have multiple devices, it will cost you download time for each one, even if you are only using one.

See AND READ, MARK AND INWARDLY DIGEST:- http://www.cnet.com/8301-17918_1-57...idden-cost-for-the-magic-and-how-to-avoid-it/ before you comment.

It will soon eat into your XGigs a month!

I havent read every bit of the article but one you have downloaded the film to your device i dont think it is suggesting the device needs to be coonnected. I have downloaded music, films, bbc iplayer products and books and they all play just fine without a wifi or 3g connection - for example in flight safe mode. You couldnt play any of these on an aircraft otherwise.

It is so if you are downloading from the cloud, home share etc.

Let me tell you the reason why I went searching for this article.

We have a 5Gb a month download limit with Vodafone Greece for €14.95. I have downloaded several movies from home to watch on the boat. However since the advent of "The Cloud" these have always been accompanied by an add-on called "iTunes Extras". I don't want these as they take up space on an already cramped hard drive. I have tried to halt these extra downloads but whenever the iTunes application is opened they re-start automatically in the background. I decided a few days ago to delete these "Extras" but what has happened is that MOST OF the regular versions have gone instead but they have left their icons behind. If I remember correctly, in the cases of the ones that were NOT deleted, I did their partners' deletions when the computer was NOT connected to the net. If I click on the surviving iTunes versions, my only way now to gain access to what I have paid for, a new download starts for each of which an estimate of 1 to 1.5 hours timespan is indicated. Seems to me that Apple want control and if you try to deny this you don't just get your wrists slapped, they kick your head in for resisting! We have a Samsung Tab also but the downloading experience with that is much more user friendly. It loads movies quicker, with no skips or out of sync moments, they don't try to take control and they don't push stuff that you don't want.

Thanks for this Steve, I noticed a spilke of 8GB on two days after I plugged in the newly acquired Apple tv 3rd. So that got me into warnings with my provider! I just use iTunes to play my own content now, preferring Netflix streaming and for music (not on Appletv) Spotify (on subscription). Most I can have at home monthly is 60GB which is vastly more than your Cap with Vodafone Greece.I am amazed how much data gets gobbled up so quickly.I've disabled sync between machines now on iTunes as I suspect much activity is going on behind my back.In fact I've been unplugging the Appletv after using it in case sneaky stuff happens.I hope to find a program to monitor traffic overheads realtime?

Depending on what your setup is and how technical you are, I have some open firmware running on my router that measures the aggregate daily usage for all devices running through the router as well as giving an instantaneous data rate (it does a few other useful things as well), see http://syspringdawn.blogspot.co.uk/2013/08/connecting-to-interweb-ii_23.html. On Windows only I used to use Networx

The Vodafone Mobile Hotspot gives "Megabytes still available" but when I was watching movies for which I had already paid and downloaded, that went down alarmingly rapidly. On two occasions it went to NIL whilst watching. I consider that to be a rip-off. (NOT by Vodafone, they have been excellent but by the "DEADLY FRUIT"!!!)

Switch off Genius if you have it on, also go to iTunes preferences, store preferences and deselect the automatic downloads.

IMHO once you are an apple user you WILL do as they say and you WILL keep paying through the nose for as long as you use their products. They are getting more greedy all the time. Yes Im sure Apple are in cahoots with the ISPs, and Im sure they get huuuuuuuge back handers from the ISPs as well.
Sorry to say I am apple user before you ask.

The issue I have with Apple is that their help/instruction files are not that good, it's all supposed to be intuitive. However, with a bit of persevering you can switch all the guff off and then just download when you want. It's like saving electricity, start by switching off lights in rooms where there is no one present i.e. get the basics right.
