When to change the oil?

imho I would change it and leave clean oil in your engine. I should add though, that we live on the boat, and I change mine whenever it gets really black, and always before the recommended number of hours.

I change the filter about every other oil change.

I would welcome any criticism of this practise.

Change it now before the winter so that sludge etc does not settle and goo up, I was told this on an engine course a few weeks ago and I hope the lecturer was correct!

Certainly it is preferable to change the oil and filter now, then run the engine to get the new oil round all the bearings and for long enough to get it up to normal working temp. A couple of months is not a long time though if it is difficult to find the time to do it now.

yep get the old out earlier; together with it's acids etc as said above.

don't forget to give the engine a nice little run to circulate that clean oil across the oilways and bearing surfaces before switching off for a few months................

That's absolutely crap practice.

Will that do? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

(diesels always last better if the oil is changed more frequently than suggested)

Do it and use it.
It's all Year round boat.
Unless your going South for the Winter!

Ah, but I used to be a Ford Dealer service manager and also had our own family garage business servicing a fleet of Dale Farm delivery wagons.

But you don't have to be Einstein (who was a gifted HGV fitter) to know that an oil with a high detergent content will need replacing sooner rather than later. Cars manufacturers with long service intervals are playing the long game. That is, by the time the adverse effects of long oil-change intervals become apparent the vehicle will most likely be out of warranty.
Boat engines often don't reach a good working temperature if they're just used for leaving and returning to a marina or mooring, so acids and contaminants hang around. Change the oil sooner rather than later.

Glad She changed the oil that Cod was nice.
What's" hydrogenerated oil" oil about? Water based? oilpaintings (swmbo) ain't one anymore! No She don't look on ere!

mmm, do agree that changing oil earlier than later is the best practice, after all oil and filter cost a lot less than a new engine, but, I should keep your background to youself for any kind of credibility. After all you should know, Phil......
