When is it time to retire the ensign

Wait until the result of the Scottish referendum is known. No point in buying a new ensign now if you have to throw it away because the Union Flag has to be changed.

Apart from the odd loony, all of the Scots I know have no intention of voting for independence.

English friends, if they were to get the vote? We that's very different.

Me, I was born a Brit & will die a Brit & hope that we will all still be on the same side - that is until the 6 Nations!

So the flag will stay the same.

In spirit I'm in agreement with Davies in 'The Riddle of the Sands' who didn't wear an ensign on Dulcibella because he regarded it as nationalistic rot. For the benefit of overseas officials I use one but ensure that it is perfectly formed but very small.

Posting here as to avoid starting yet another ensign thread..

So there's a boat anchored behind us, dark blue British defaced ensign showing a witch on a broomstick. I think this is linked to the forces? Someone enlighten me please, thank you :)

Just kayaked over with the pup, it's not a witch - sorry, one of my muppet moments!

Same here,I use a courtesy flag, hopefully it annoys the closet BNP types as well!

Courtesy flag implies that you recognize your host nation & will abide by their regulations.

Your own marine ensign indicates your vessel's nation of register & that your will conform to that set of rules, qualifications & equipment standards.

There is no compulsory register of British flagged pleasure vessels (than God) & no enforcement of any UK maritime working boats regulations etc. on pleasure vessels within UK Waters.

Problems can kick in when UK vessels visit foreign waters where conflictions in regulations will occur.

As to flying your national maritime flag at only certain times of the day? This is that interesting very British compulsion to invent pointless customs, call them tradition & then try to inflict them on other Brits. Possibly also makes them feel superior to Johnny Foreigner:)

My position? The red duster is your flag so fly it as & when you please (if you have to advise the world 'you are a bit special' fly a blue or white one) but when in foreign waters, if only out of politeness, always fly their national flag from your stbd spreader. Additionally, in some places, it may save you from a lot of hassle.

Why would that make me throw it away?

I also find the ensign may give an initial impression of the people aboard even though I know it is totally ridiculous.
Blue ones.. a bit stuck up
worn out red ones... more a[[approachable
New red ones... like things spick and span
Over large ensigns .... outgoing
I know its wrong but......
