When does a boat become a ship? NM

Trouble is. It would clean away the new forum along with the oil, TCM has cleaned the whole Meditaranian sea away!!

Re: Charity

I'm sure all the old salts out there are glad to know that there are those around still prepared to give so selflessly...

Originally a ship was a three masted square rigged sailing ship, thus two masted vessels were brigs, snows and brigantines etc.

More recently a ship has been defined as one that carries its own boats. Thus all submarines, which do not carry boats, are referred to by their crews as boats. And that includes the big ones that carry missiles.

I don't know if carrying an inflatable on davits at your stern counts

Story I heard was that a ship could stay out in any weather, but a boat had to run for port if it got too manky...

Something that never goes any faster than 6kt's and hates MoBo wash. They also have a tendancy to turn in a very annoying way when heading towards the wind, some people tell me this procedure is called,,Ta,,,,,Ta,,,,,,ack,,,,,,,tack,,,,,,ing,,,,,,tacking.

Nasty stutter you've got there, bin eating to many leaves? They have a habit of fermenting in the tummy, causing all kinds of overpressure!!

So why is Royal Yacht Britannia a Yacht then? I don't see any sails and its a MOBO??

<hr width=100% size=1>...but then I would say that wouldn't I.....

The accepted defininition when I was a Cadet was....

"A BOAT CAN BE HOISTED ABOARD A SHIP BUT A SHIP CANNOT BE HOISTED ABOARD A BOAT"

Yacht comes from the Dutch (and German) "jagen" meaning to hunt or to chase. Therefore a swift vessel. For the French a Yacht is exclusively a mobo gin palace.

"A SHIP is a floating vessel that can propel itself with it's own machinary that has a
FUNNEL"

If that's the case, what is HMS Victory?
