When anchoring off Selsey and East Head can you dink in to the shore

Re: When anchoring off Selsey and East Head can you dink in to the sho

Don't worry not suggesting you don't, to be fair the little boy had picked up a bag of it from besides the bin

Re: When anchoring off Selsey and East Head can you dink in to the sho

I went past east head at around 1pm on Saturday and at around the same time on Monday. Definitely only a few boats anchored. I was even tempted to take a picture and comment on how lonely the boats looked on a bank holiday weekend.

[I would seriously check your charts the only boats I see anchored outside the harbour (either Bracklesham Bay or Hayling Bay) are Committee boats or and angling boats.

Must be a very good reason, probably something to do with the shallows, long way to shore and the swell/breakers!

You can find a temporary berth off Hayling beach even in a Northerly gale (bottom is hard sand) , as close in as the groynes if the tide serves. Look for the Obstn splodge on your chartplotter which I marked some 30 years ago but is no longer a hazard. You'll have to scrape up dog poo of course but there are bins on the prom at the top of the shingle beach.

The real risk is the arrival of an onshore breeze in settled conditions which transforms a pleasant lunch into mayhem!

Local chart 3418 cannot keep up with the now frequent changes to the West Pole sands, and the Inner Swashway no longer exists but there is a shallow gully inside Chi Bar beacon.

PM me for more, including Low Water pics.

I anchored off Selsey village last year - just northeast of the lifeboat station and outside the local moorings. I had a very peaceful night and I wondered why I hadn't stopped there before. Shingle beach short distance and easy row.

I agree! What is difficult about rounding Selsey Bill? Done it hundreds of times without worrying. Weather/tides taken into consideration of course. Is there anywhere along the entire south coast where pots cannot be a hazard?

Re: When still learning how to behave . . . .

Oops, must stop criticising peeps who can't spell or won't spell!

It's so unfair to " tax the brains of even the most compitant."

That's another illiterate Fireball quote.

Hoist with your own petard!

Re: When still learning how to behave . . . .

wot - no "PM me for more information" ... I thought that was your standard footer ....

and it is the quality of the post that counts - not your ability to spell ...

Re: When still learning how to behave . . . .

Anchoring off Selsey

Try Selsey

go around Mixon pole leaving well clear if you do not know the lie of the single banks and anchor close in on Selsey town east beach.

Do not go past houses towards Pagham - foul ground is where they hid the mulberry harbour cassions by sinking them in WW11 and a couple are still there - one awash at LWS

When going East from Selsey do not angle in to look at Bognor etc, the Bognor Rocks ( actually hard clay lumps) are also awash at LWS

Re: When anchoring off Selsey and East Head can you dink in to the sho

We anchored at East Head on Monday at about 2pm - we passed you going in the opposite direction by Birdham - and as you say it wasn't too busy. A few boats arrived there after us. I was very impressed by a chap anchored just astern of us who was swimming round his yacht and scrubbing the waterline.

Re: When anchoring off Selsey and East Head can you dink in to the sho

Guys - could you all post pictures that are within the proper size for this forum, it makes reading the post laborious!!!!

I agree! My mistake. I tried to correct it, but thanks to the dumb time limit on editing , I was unable to do so. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I live at Selsey and there shouldn't be a problem anchoring to the East of the Lifebaot station but beware of the moorings.
If you turn North just before the Mixon pole at High tide you won't have a problem with depth but note that the tide does run quite quickly around the Bill. The beach is steep to shingle so no problem landing with a dingy.
When leaving it's best to head South back the way you came rather than heading West around the Bill. It is possible but not advisable without local knowledge.
Enjoy your visit - you will probably be the only yacht which makes it all the nicer!
