The steering mechanism is a swr upon which is wrapped a helical coil sheathed in a plastic outer attatched in the centre (the wheel )to a gear. At each end; the rudder/ quadrant end, the helical coil & swr enter an alluminium outer sleave, approx 18" long, inside which I summise is a bush and a (piston?) that transfers the helical coil movement onto a rod that operates on a push me pull me as the wheel is turned. This is where one of the ends is seized. Do you know the name of this type of steering gear, How to dismantle it and where are parts available. The boat is a phinosailer built 1982 by phino holland, designed by E. Schoemaker.

replace the whole cable its the only way my nimbus has the same system cost £75

the cable is a complete unit made possibly by ultraflex or teleflex it consists of a helical screw cable in side a sleeve one end contects to the steering helm boss and its cog inside and when the wheel is turned brings the rod on the other end into motion
you will have to change the whole cable they get bits of muck inside them and seize up dont try and lubricate it just bin it
you will have to take cable out to make sure you get the same size and make to go back look on the net under teleflex cables you will see what i mean
