Wheel steering on a 26' boat??

Re: Wheel steering on a 26\' boat??

I can only go by comments from sailors who have wheel steering and have helmed my 18ft boats.
They, without exception say how nice it is to steer with a tiller and feel in touch with the boat and the water again.

Re: Wheel steering on a 26\' boat??

my wheel steering is very good, there is feed-back via the 48inch wheel ( 1 3/4 turns lock to lock ) turning a very large spade rudder.

says again SPADE Rudder /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif ( quick exit stage left )

Re: Wheel steering on a 26\' boat??

I have never helmed a boat with a wheel until last month. For the fisrt 7/8 days I felt almost dyslexic, I don't know why it should have been so, cos i kan speel ko, it just felt odd having to think about consequences of your actions.

Re: Wheel steering on a 26\' boat??

on our first trip from launching & just motoring we were all over the place, due to "over-correcting " the helm. she is so responsive just very small helm movement is required. its supprising when sailing on the wind & looking @ the top of the rudder stock how little it moves.
of course i am a wonderfull helmsman so i daresay that might account for that /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Over-correcting
Yup! that is what got to me I learned to look at the display which showed how much rudder movement there was, this helped in not over correcting, assuming I had turned the right way in the first place.

Isnt there a new 25 footer advertised in this months PBO.... yes, spotted...a legend.. at the boat show.
I have wheel steering ( in my wheel house!!) but it took a lot of getting used to. 4 turns lock to lock and I still confuse myself in tight situations. Much prefered the tiller.

Re: Wheel steering on a 26\' boat??

I've just taken out the wheel on my 30 ft boat and am replacing it with a tiller. The cockpit was just too small for it. Very difficult to get around it quickly to trim the sails etc. Also don't see the point in standing up getting the full force of the elements when you could be nicely tucked under the sprayhood with the tiller in your hand!
