What's your most useful sailing discovery this season?

Re: What\'s your most useful sailing discovery this season?

Do not leave solar shower bags untied on the coach roof, they will roll off somewhere on the passage.

Do not drop a walking stick in the tender, it will hit the seat (see above) and bounce happily into the oggin.

There was something else that Neptune stole on our summer cruise but I forget what it was now.

Use baby wipes for washing yourself when on long passages

Re: What\'s your most useful sailing discovery this season?

So now I've got to buy nappies AND baby wipes. People are going to think I'm getting broody

being a cat it is easy enough to pop it into the saloon when needed to get it out of the way.

You sit on a cat? We'd better call the RSPCA

Ten year old boy

Suddenly he's done his RYA dinghy course, joined the Sea Scouts, and become really useful.

Can go up mast, row Mother ashore in tender, hand, reef and steer.

Highly recommended!

Handheld GPS...... I am a convert... I am sure that many will jump on me with drawbacks, but I now know where I am, and where I am going, and how long it will take without going below for 15 minutes to calculate. Also found that my log was misreading and my top speed (over the ground - no tide) was 1 knot higher than I thought. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: What\'s your most useful sailing discovery this season?

That there is not enough water to get into the Exe at 1 1/2 hrs before LWS.

Re: What\'s your most useful sailing discovery this season?

That a fin keel boat can waggle it's way off the mud more easily than two massive twin engined motorboats who were foolishly following it.

Re: What\'s your most useful sailing discovery this season?

that checkstays give you an extra knot of speed in light winds, which does help in a sigma 36!

Re: What\'s your most useful sailing discovery this season?

That owning and sailing your own boat is a zillion times more satisfying than chartering.

That its best to check your windlass is working before dropping anchor and watching it let 35m of chain free-fall and have to be hauled up by hand.

That comfy cockpit cushions make all the difference.

That those smart little shroud cleats stop you contiunally tripping over burgee halyards when dropping sail.

That I simply must get lazyjacks.

I'm sure there's more...

Re: Ten year old boy

Agreed. I have 8 & 12 year old boys fitted aboard Morzen to supplement the tiller pilot. They draw less current but require regular feeding.

Based on recent trip to Holland I can confirm that they are also never known to quail at the fury of a (near) gale & are hardly ever sick at sea but have yet to test them on shipping a salvagee...

Re: What\'s your most useful sailing discovery this season?

Why don't you use a fender? You can tie these at both ends.

Not Becky, her better half. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: What\'s your most useful sailing discovery this season?

yes!!! that was it, a balloon fender went walkies (or should that be swimmies) on the visitor pontoon at Dale.

Height, the inflatable dinghy seat gives me a decent height so I can see where we are going!
