Re: What\'s tops for survival at sea?

The simple mantra us ex military types were taught is -

Protection - ie the liferaft
Location - EPIRP, satphone etc
Water
Food.

So I guess the water would win over the fishing kit. After all you can always improvise for fishing kit.- SWMBOs bra catch maybe?

[/ QUOTE ] This makes a lot of sense when you think how long you'd survive without protection (a few hours); how if you had an EPIRB you might be found in a few days; and how, if you had no water you'd be unlikely to survive more than a few days.

Unless you have by now "cheated"and read the article

Which is well worth reading /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I'd still take the fishing kit

cheers Joe

I suppose what I'm trying to do is to challenge the dogma that one shouldn't drink sea water under any circumstances.

You should read "Untamed Seas" (Deborah Scaling Kiley and Meg Noonan), the true story of the wreck of the yacht "Trashman" off Florida in which 5 people took to a rubber dinghy after the yacht sank. 5 days & nights later, the two survivors were picked up by a Russian freighter.

Several of the casualties (two, ISTR) decided to drink sea water to sate their thirst. Their decline into madness, and delusion which eventually led to their deaths is graphically described, and frightening to read. (The whole story is frightening, but a good read).

It convinced me - I'd take the water.

Sushi with a dash of eyeballs yummy!

I always have caught fish fresh/salt therefore sustainable

equals survival

(I assumed the tabasco and lemon would be in my pocket)

cheers Joe

Re: What\'s tops for survival at sea?

I'd hope that I would be found sooner than two months, floating in my liferaft off of Clacton Pier.

Not sure if anyone knows or indeed tried it but you can actually absorb the water from seawater without any harm by pouring it into your anus via a funnel, where the bowel will then absorb the water.
So if you took the water you could use that and then cut the top of the bottle and use it as a funnel.

Ok so it isn't controlled circumstances or under lab conditions. But it's pretty convincing in that he did 3 seperate voyages in an open inflatable without any supplies. Bearing in mind that his original concept was triggered by the deaths of fishermen cast adrift within a day or so from safety.

His main point was that the will to live and the belief that it is possible are the key motivators. This is borne out by the stories of the Robertsons, Wortmans, Callahan, Poon Lim etc etc etc. His medical knowledge & use of urine/ sea water/ fish fluids etc just offer tatics to increase your chance & therfore your will to survive.

I reread my copy of Bombard about every 4-5 years just to remind myself how it can be done.

[/ QUOTE ] Yup. Lost my nerve when I considered that the dependants of some poor soul that had read my earlier contribution and died of sea water intoxication might sue me. I'd hate to have to sell Freestyle.

Can't remember if it was the Robertsons or Baileys - but I THINK it was the Robertsons that did sea water enemas using the dinghy pump. It worked well but was not too pleasant. The SWMBO had been a nurse - that's how she knew what to do.

the salt will still do your kidneys

cheers Joe

[/ QUOTE ]

Ahh but it wouldn't because the gut does not allow the salt to pass into your system

Re: What\'s tops for survival at sea?

It was the Robertsons.

Mother was a nurse but the water was a mixture or sea water and fish / turtle blood.

The program was on discovery channel a couple months ago

Re: What\'s tops for survival at sea?

Being of the female variety of homo sapiens, I'd take the water. Every bra I own has a series of hooks & eyes so I'm sure I could manage to rig a few fishing hooks if desperate........

We've only ever managed to catch one fish from our boat and that was caught by one of our crew who goes fishing regularly so I wouldn't fancy my chances if my survival was dependant on my fishing skills
