What's this thimble for?

They sell these in Norwegian traditional chandlers, who knows why they are designed like that, is there a special reason I haven't thought of? Looks sort of interesting.

Yes it's symmetrical, good point about the vice!

I think that’s it. Tokoloshi has cracked it in his post no.2 above. You feed the wire in to one leg, after parcelling and serving the bit that will lie in the thimble, then push it back into the other side and haul taut, then put the whole thimble in an ordinary vice and get busy with the fid.

I think I want some!
