I think that’s it. Tokoloshi has cracked it in his post no.2 above. You feed the wire in to one leg, after parcelling and serving the bit that will lie in the thimble, then push it back into the other side and haul taut, then put the whole thimble in an ordinary vice and get busy with the fid.
I think I want some!

It is a wire rope thimble which allows the wire to be spliced without using a rigger’s vice, and it is available either in galvanised steel for galvanised wire or in stainless steel for stainless wire.

Funnily enough I have seen a lignum vitae version for hemp! (well something very similar anyway..)
