What's this engine/drive package worth?

Happily going along getting our newly rebuilt sport fisher ready for next season. Fitted with a part reconditioned 70hp Transit diesel with new ends, mains, rings, water pump, injectors and all new marinising gear including heat exchanger manifold, raw water pump, oil cooler, engine feet and mounts, 80 amp alternator, instruments and senders, damper drive plate and conversion parts for coupling to Volvo 290 outdrive which has also been partially reconditioned with all new bushing, seals, tilt sender and trim and tilt pump.
Then along came a good condition 180hp V8 with late model 280 DP-C at sensible money so out comes the Transit and 290 drive having never been afloat or run apart from running with a water feed when we got bored. So what should I be asking for this Transit and Volvo outdrive package?
 
best keep it as a spare as those v8 chevy diesels are bad news in a boat & they use fuel like a v8 petrol

I've known a few people try them & its seems to be a constant round of rebuilds & problems

I'd do some homework before you install it
 
Why don't you all just let Samurai die a natural death and get over it?
Just as a matter of interest how many of you have actually owned one of these engines?
I've never had an issue with them in trucks
But that's not what I originally asked!

Rob, The boat is 26ft and about two tons. It's a sports fisher in appearance but maybe not in performance with the Transit, but with the extra power it will be better although it's not going to be thrashed!

I am guessing transit engines are two a penny so in my head your engine setup is only worth the sum total of the parts you have fitted without the costs of fitting them. As for the drive, I would take a lead from what they fetch on eBay (£750 -£1k). You might do better selling as two items rather as a package.

Just my thoughts, might be miles off on the figures.

Perhaps you are sat on a real gold mine......

I had 2 in a 30ft carver. Although samurai badged engines, the installation was custom with bowman water and oil coolers and custom stainless manifolds. I think many issues came out due to poor installation. I had issues including mechanical lift pump issues on both due to the cam rod wearing excessively, constant fuelling problems which ended up with the fuel pump requiring a new housing due to internal components being harder than casing, fair bit of oil use, destroyed a 290 leg I was told due to the torque (not convinced about that) and carp fuel consumption even after all was sorted. engines had 250 hrs on them.

The engine has obviously been I great success in many applications but I wouldn't have it again in a marine application. They never sounded right at anything over 3k revs. Saving grace is spares are cheap but I needed quite a few and lost many days out and confidence in them.

Also heard horror stories of how they where put together but in fairness, I never saw it first hand.

£1,000 to £1,500 for the leg and engine total.

Selling separately may be worth while, but don't expect much. People aren't exactly tripping over themselves to put an old Transit engine in their small boats.

same goes! didn't intend to hijack your thread just share some wisdom

the story above is fairly typical of the horror stories I've heard many times about these gm engines & not just samurai supplied ones but also marine diesel ones who look like they do the job properly (marine diesel did a range of horsepowers & turbo & none turbo versions)

if you want to push a reasonable sized boat above displacement speed you will need to rev it to around 3k anything less you will be at displacement speed

a bit pointless fitting a big engine if your only going to do little engine speeds

re value of your transit engine you will find someone who wants it but it will be a case of finding the right customer who doesn't want the hassle of finding the engine & fitting the marinising kit themselves

i'd say engine value will be around the cost of the kit plus a little for the base engine

as stated drive is fairly easy to value due to popularity & plenty to compare with
 
Thanks all. I'll be happy to report back on how it all goes next year. The fuel pump rod issue is well known and easily solved with an electric pump but we'll see what happens. No big deal to pull it out if necessary but with millions of 6.2s and 6.5s all over the world there must be some good ones. They certainly aren't as bad as the evil Perkins 4.99 and 4107 probably the worst diesel engines in the world.
