What's this canopy fitting called?

The canopy on my Targa 40 has two arms with these ball and socket type fittings on them. This one doesn't particularly want to stay in, so I think the little retaining wire has in some way failed. I need to buy a replacement but I don't know what I'm googling for - anyone know what these are called (or even better, where I can get a replacement from)?

Thanks all - just what I needed. Rather stupidly I didn't measure the dims when I was on the boat yesterday, I'll just have to pop back down tomorrow and have another look... :D

It shares its name with a number of different marine fittings and fixtures. Up here it is known as an "owtlikethis". The normal method for obtaining one is to take the part or indeed a picture of it, march into the premises of a possible stockist, offer up the part or picture and say " mate, ave yer gorr owtlikethis"

Similar items can also be found on such as trial cars, lawnmower engines, and recently a strimmer.

Jimmy,

Don't want to teach you to suck eggs but the clip in the picture isn't installed correctly, now you may have removed it to release the ball from the socket at which point feel free to ignore the rest of this message!





In case you are still reading,

The clip needs to be removed, the ball pushed into the socket and then the straight part of the clip is pushed through the tiny hole just visible in the recess to the bottom left of the socket hole and up through the socket and through the hole at the top of the socket before being rotated to clip the semicircular part of the clip around the socket base. It is the straight part of the clip which stops the ball coming back out by closing off part of the hole.

If the straight part has a slight bend then the ball can pop back out, a quick straighten with a pair of pliers should see it back in working order.

I hope that makes sense........

No egginess at all, I haven't a clue about this, the strut that this fitting is on the end of just came away in my hand. I didn't purposefully do anything to the retaining wire. The photo was taken on my phone so it's limited resolution, this is the max that I've got:

From what you've said, it sounds like the wire that's there is too short, I don't think it'll make it all the way back round to the loop in the wire at bottom left, if that's what you mean?

Hi jimmy,

Hard to explain and in the picture above it looks like the holes in the socket have pulled out, I hope this photo shows how the wire locates in the socket and locks the ball in place better than my explanation.

Thanks Paul - in fact I think your explanation gives me the definitive answer - which is that the edge of the socket has failed, as you suggest, and the little holes for the retaining wire aren't holes any more. All good. I'll ring the local distributor tomorrow and see if I can go and pick some new ones up. A good excuse for a little ride out on my bike!

Looking at the enlargement, I think the vertical wire is on the "wrong" side.
The straight bit is meant to engage in the teeth on the other side of the ball, but the lower tooth looks poorly, which is why it has sprung out.

There is meant to be a hole through which the clip locates rather than 'teeth'. The 'teeth' are the remains of the pulled out hole.
