Smallest is one of the Blue Boats that operate on the River Ouse in York and the largest was a Leopard 23m in the SoF (Well I pushed the autopilot buttons a few times)
My most memorable, Bayliner 2655 (my first boat). My favourite Sealine S34, because it's mine /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Smallest is the marina putt-putt boat of about 15 feet and the largest is however long Son Vida II is. I did drive motor boat once, on Southport boating lake, which may have been all of 12 ft.
But I have not included the Ms Dunera at 517ft, which I helmed in the Med in the 1960's, or HMS Manchester at 462.5ft, which I steered for a whole hour.
For hospitality Son Vida was best, although they got me so drunk on HMS Liverpool I didn't get a chance to drive it.
Jfm let me helm his lovely Sq 58 when we were down in Antibes in July. Fab. Mind you, my first reaction was to do a David Marsh and see what it was like in a hard turn, which with hindsight was probably not quite the done thing...
Tee hee! I cant remember; was breakfast being prepared downstairs or something, and all got centrifuged onto the galley floor?? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
You're in good company tho. I had the chairman of fairline on board and he drove, and pushed the throttles forward then took his hands off them. 1.5 seconds later the turbos kicked in and, accompanied by screams from the galley, a load of half cooked food landed on the galley floor and the disgruntled chef's ankles! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
1172ft VLCC (Hellespont Paradise) Sunk-Coryton (Thames Estuary)
Min. under keel clearance 0.9mtr. Used the autopilot all the way in so I suppose I did 'helm' it as I twiddled the knobs.
OK,OK, I know that this was not really the point of the question but it is quite a contrast !!
