Whats the name of those catches where you put your finger through a hatch hole

Anyone know what these are called or how I can search for them on Google?
I have seen them under flush wooden hatch covers, you reach your finger in and pull to open them

They no doubt have another name, but it escapes me.

Me too. I thought they just fell out and disappeared until I found the broken pieces in the cutlery draw. I have four springless catches in the 'bits' box.

I've been informed they were "Chicken foot latches", due to their shape. Every time I use one I picture the scene in many a horror movie where someone has to stick their finger/hand into a dark hole and you just know they'll be screaming and pulling back a bloody stump.

If you are fitting them from new, remember, the hole for your finger goes to the side of the latch, not directly opposite it. Believe me, I know!

Finger breakers - I had them on my last boat. I made small 'Monkeys Fists' from cord, fed them through the holes and tied them to the catches to use as toggles.
No more finger risk.

Take a sample into your local dental laboratory and they will make you some in SS wire for a few pence.
