"I'd have thought best for the boat was something that actively moves the air about like diesel heating or fan heater. Oiled filled radiators do what they say on the tin, radiate. Good for very localised heating but not so good for spreading it about."

Akshully, oil filled radiators are pretty good at convection too......... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

NealB has bot said if he is living on board so wants a confortable temp or if he simply wants to avoid condensation and freezing while he is a way.
Assuming he is living on board and has electricity available then that will be the cheapest for purchase and running.

A high powered fan heater with thermostat will give heat quickly which is great if you are away all day and want instant heat on return. Heat urned off when you are away.

A lower powered heater or oil filled type are much safer in that there is not the concentrated high temperatures but would have to be left running continuously to get comfort when you return.

Diesel heater are quick to heat up the cabin but woulld be expensive to run compared to electricity.

The reverse cycle electric heating (and cooling) is efficient but expensive complex heavy to install. good luck olewill

I disagree but only just. There's not much in it but taking into account the diesel cost only then it works out slighly less....

An eberspacher D2 uses 0.23 litres an hour at full whack (2.2kw) according to their catalogue. So diesel @ 50p per litre it's about 12.5p per hour for 2.2kw of heat.

One unit of electricity is 1000 watts (1kw) used for one hour. So assuming your electricity cost you 6p per unit 6p x 2200watts / 1000 = 13.2p As I said not much in it but diesel on paper would be slightly cheaper /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: What\'s the most cost effective way of heating...

I have 3 small oil filled tube type heaters, plus a dehumidifier, which runs on a time clock.

Has always worked - unless some selfish sod in the hardstanding disconnects you! I was in France (La Roche Bernard) when this happened. It was freezing weather - far colder than we get in the UK, all the pipes froze and the accumulator split, so on commissioning in the spring, progressivle every joint on the whole boat came undone accompanied by the appropiate hiss of escaping water! Oh well - I bypassed the accumulator - didn't seem to have any effect on the operation of the water pressure system!
