Whats the difference....

I had the workshop manuals for a time, think the orientation of the heat exchanger was one of the most obvious differences. There were further variations than just 07/08, one had a "low profile" tag.
 
4107 = 4cylinders 107 cubic inches
4108 = 4cylinders 108 cubic inches

So difference = 1 cubic inch!

Same for all Perkins of that era.
 
The 4107 is a 36HP motor, also known as the Westebeke 40, somewhat older than the 4108. The parts aren't interchangeable. There is a company in the USA called Foley Marine, or Foley Engines, that can supply parts or convert your 4107 to a 4108. I am assuming they are still in business. Regarding support in Europe/UK, sorry can't help.
 
ok, the old 4107 uses a cylinder liner that is pushed into the engine block. with nothing but the liner itself to keep the coolant water out of the cylinder, this is called a wet liner, and when changing the cylindr head gasket, a sealent must be used. the 4108 on the other hand uses a dry liner, this means that the cylinder is cast is position in the engine block, machined and then a liner is pressed into place. no seals required to keep th ecooling water where it should be. the two engines though almost identical, where produced for a variety of uses, but they're both about 48 hp at 4000 rpm. for marine use, they are often derated, to 35 ish hp at about 3000 ish rpm. Dependant on your engine manufacturer, or should i say mariniser, you can find quite a lot of variation between the models. however some parts are interchangable, but there were so many engines built for so many purposes, (Tractors ford transits, generators etc) getting one with the parts that are the same as the engine you have may be hard. things like water pumps and injectors are the same, I'm pretty sure the fuel distributer pump is the same and the lift pump is for certain. if you buy the workshop manual from perkins, can't find mine right now, it covers both engines. I won't say for definite that the cylinder head is the same, but it should be, it uses the same gasket.
