somewhat depends on the skier, too, and the skis. Usually, you need enough acceleration to get out of the hole, but with fat skis, a lighter person can probably manage to stay up at about 13-14knts, though you need to watch the speed bleeding off in the turns.
I d say pick up speed was the greatest issue.
I have been encouraged by most the posts /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
but have reservations about my abilities behind my boat especially with swmbo at the helm

I am a competent snow skier and a friend came on holiday who had never snow skied previously but could water ski well, he was a natural on the snow.
I deduced from this I too can water ski, I have only ever once tried and I didnt fall off and went around a large bay for 20 minutes, I let go of the rope and headed for the beach but lack of experience forced me to sink just before I could beach land /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
I will buy a set/pair of starter skis and try it with a 100 foot rope ??
and PLB in case swmbo gets any ideas /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Waterskiing and snow skiing are the same as riding a motorbike and driving a car. same but different. Both involve going along with blanks on your feet but that's where the similarity ends.
I really would spend a small amount of money and get a couple of hours dedicated lessons behind a dedicated ski boat.
Once you have grasped the knack, you are there. They can probably advise on skis for you too.
One thing.. there arent that many places to waterski. Either you need a club licence, or you need some very calm and sheltered bay- usually just where everyone is anchored...or a skiclub has sole rights.
We ve managed on a stretch on the north side of IOW.. need a chart to spot quite where... and round out beyong Hurst.. sorry I need a chart to remember quite where. You use up quite alot of room , so you dont want other boats going in all directions, and you really should have one spotter and one at the helm.

Nah ... hold back on to that purchase ..... I've done downhill skis on water .... now that was tricky .... but if you start on the beach or in the bow of a dinghy, you have a better chance.... tie something around the bindings though ... coz if you fall, you'll drop the skis.... and they sink ... unless you have a water buoy on of course.... much more fun for the spectators, and very much more uncontrollable on water .... need a lot of speed thou ... which adds to the amusement for the spectators ... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I once towed 2 mates inshore past Portland Bill in the mid. eighties. It was on a calm misty day on our way back from the Scillies to the Solent in a Corniche Express. They were up before the people on The Bill could spot us and dropped off again in the mist on the other side. About 3-4 miles i think. If i remember i think they were on mono skies.
Last year my son kept mithering me about trying out wakeboarding behind our Phantom38 - so in the end I relented and gave it a try.
The tricky bit was gently manouvering the boat to get everything lined up, but with a throttle forward, the boat easily popped him out of the water and we just eased back to a gentle 18knots or so.
It was more difficult picking him up, as its not as easy in a flybridge and a bit of wind to pick him up again and retrieve the rope, but it worked.
His only comment was "the wake was a bit mushy, I couldnt do any decent jumps.." Hey ho, at least we know we can do it, although SWMBO says never again.
This is the picture from the flybridge, with Alcudia in the background...
I have seen folk here water skiing and wake boarding behind a 30' Grady White with 2 x 250 hp Yamahas on the back - created an impressive wake just before they got up on the plane......
If you are patient and watch this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWINygISxDE
right through to the end, just before the end they show these two lads wakeboarding (I think) behind one of the huge French trimarans doing probably 30 knots under sail.
