What's the best on-board Christmas cockle-warmer?

Adding booze to other unhealthy things seems singularly seasonal. I made martinis on the Topper in October '94, but adding an olive didn't really stretch our imagination. I'd prefer a really rich consommé...or some hot sweet coconutty molten white-chocolate rum concoction...

...I must get busy. Any recommendations?

Jeez, just drink decent spirits, then mixers are superfluous.

I was hoping to inveigle otherwise circumspect ladies into my boat (read living room), with enticing 'nog' - disguised as something that no-one can resist, because it smells of something delightfully sweet and festive, rather than hard yeller licker.

If I was alone, I'd be quite content with real ale at lunch and Lagavulin after dark.

An old recipe from a post-war yachting book. "Athol Brose".
One part Malt whisky
One part honey
One part cream

Actually, it's not bad, and knocks spots off Bailley's

Right, they're on my Waitrose list. I haven't bought cream this century. Is it still widely available? It wasn't in France.

* VSOP Courvoisier or Hennesey, Mount Gay rum, a Malt of your choice,

at push, even a decent Gin or Vodka/ Aquavit etc

Dear me, Mount Gay, a decent spirit? It may be better than some but it is still well below par when it comes to rum.

They are minimum standards.

VSOP is not best quality Brandy either, but it will do. I'd even accept a good blended Scotch like Black Bottle, Ballantine's or Baillie Nicole Jarvie.

One shouldn't need to spend millions to get good quality.

I knew that had reminded me of something...Greek yoghurt with liquid honey added...delicious, but I bet I haven't eaten it in twenty years. Now, if I further-liquify it with 100ml of very light scotch like Glenlivit, or maybe use sweet-tasting bourbon...YES! Jack Daniels!...

...the J.D. Smoothie! Fabulous. You heard it here, first. :)

Woodlouse, I guess you haven't tried Mount Gay Extra Old? :)
Comparing this with 'ordinary' Mount Gay Eclipse rum is like comparing a fine single malt with 'ordinary' scotch whisky.

Although I am happy to stand corrected if there are better rums available.

Fernandos, Rum from Trinidad. Anything above black Label I like the 1897? and 1914? Rums...

One part brandy to one part port, warmed to blood heat.

The best drink when needing to warm up on a cold wet day :)

I was hoping for one of great-granny's recipes, laden with enough cognac to sink the Marie Celeste.

Until she died, my great-aunt used to make the brandy butter for Christmas and send it out to the whole family. Her recipe included the phrase "keep adding brandy until you can't taste the butter" :)

I have tried their "extra old" stuff and found it only marginally better. I was also skeptical of it since I could find no indication of age on the bottle. Most aged spirits tell you how old they are, mount gay extra old does not.

Anyway, if you want fine rum then try Goslings from Bermuda.

Jack Daniels do a honey version - very moreish, aslo partial to warmed sloe gin

Brandy and Lovage is an old fashioned drink, but try Whiskey and Lovage; both versions are sipping drinks rather than gulpers, and the Lovage is good for sorting a gyppy tummy by itself. If you frequent Lidl or Aldi their cheap brandies and whiskeys work really well.

I expect most of you are also aware of Shrub, Aniseed, peppermint, Clove and other alcoholic cordials in the range that work as different mixers, with rum etc. usually a 1:1 ratio, or as tested by the recipient - but they are all alcoholic drinks.

A recipe for Mulled wine would be appreciated if you have one, cinnamon I believe is one of the ingredients? Also a Christmas Punch ..!
