Whats the best knife to get? Without spending a bomb?

Be wary of lanyard getting fast, and blade being pulled through your fist. Unfortunately speaking from experience gained when opening sand bags to build hard stand for boat building.

I dislike Leatherman type knife blades for sharp point and lack of grip which would make them prone to this hazard. I toy with the possibilities of attaching the lanyard to the front of the handle, or of using a light elastic lanyard.

I use a riggers sheath knife, with a bolster between the blade and handle. Traditional pattern with a stainless blade. These work best when cutting against a wood block. Spike with knife is particularly useful when faced with mooring shackles.

Serrated kitchen knife is good precaution against getting fast on pot lines, and is relatively easy to tie to the boathook.

I have one of these

on my boat. I had to cut through a 10mm mooring line once, went through in one go. I also use one when I'm on a safety boat.

Re: Whats the best knife to get? K-devil or make one

When trapped by nets in Spain, the diver assisting me threw back all the specialist gear I was offering and worked with the kitchen devil from the galley. I then made a long-handled knife and serrated the blade using an angle grinder and a rack (to keep the pitch even.) the grinder is only used on one side, and the blade is sharpened on the other using a normal stone( acute angle to blade).

Totally agree with that. Poly-prop around a prop will often melt into a hard blob even under water. The only answer to that one is a hack-saw.

I further this trend, a sharp plain blade will not cut through snrled up rope anywher near as well as serated blade. I use a mini hacksaw or a full hacksaw blade with a grip ( padsaw?)
