What's the best anchor?

Re: What\'s the best anchor?

Thanks to those who had useful comments. To those who didn't have anything useful to say - WHY SAY IT.

Reasonably easy to answer. I was having a cynical mickey take at you, because you have been on this forum a long while, and must have seen all the anchor threads that pass by with monotonopus regularity. Your post request was without anything new to ask, that hasn't been answered a thousand (at least) times before.
A search of the forum would have brought you a vweritable harvest of information, instead of the world weary answers you actually got.

Re: What\'s the best anchor?

As a relative newbie stoking the fire that is this thread...

I thought it was common knowledge that there was no point trying to find 'the best' anchor? Surely you need two- one for rocky bottoms, one for sandy/muddy ones. I've even heard it suggsted (gasp!) that a good ole fisherman's is as good as anything else on both stony and weedy bottoms, and for the soft stuff why not just use a danforth or fortress?

This is « THE » anchor which has, by far, the longest experience... Still used in many parts of the world with very good results

– I know plenty of boats which never moved in very windy conditions... in mud, sand and also in weed... :ooo:

It is cheap, it can be adjustable ( you can easily change the ballast weight )

Many advantages that « New Gen » anchors don’t have!..

But « New Gen » anchors are just a little bit more efficient!

With the cr*p search function we have these days?

Re: What\'s the best anchor?

Even with that. Far better to learn how to do a YBW search on Google though.

Why post up the same question that has been asked a thousand times on this forum? A search should yield many threads on the subject.

Re: What\'s the best anchor?

The problem with the magazine tests and many opinions expressed on the forum, is that they are based on holding power in the ultimate storm. For 99% of us what really matters is a) do they set immediately on all / most bottoms b) will they re-set by themselves if broken out by turn of the tide c) are they easy to handle and stow. I've found out the answers for our boat and cruising grounds by trial and error with various types. Smallish boat so it doesn't cost me a fortune...
