What\'s my MMSI number?

I bought a new Icom 411 recently and have just installed it - it's just occurred to me that I don't know what my MMSI number is. Am I right in thinking the number is programmed into the radio already? How do I find out what it is - have just looked through the documentation and can't seem to find anything.

Re: What\'s my MMSI number?

if you don't have one you need to apply for one from ofcom. best check your ships radio licence first you may have one already. It's got nothing to do with the manufacturer of the VHF they don't issue you with the number.

Re: What\'s my MMSI number?

If your boat is called Compton Lady as per your bio, then according to the ITU data base of ships and call signs you don't have a radio licence /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

So :
1: if you have then tell Ofcom that it doesn't appear on the ITU database and go on the Ofcom site and amend your details to change to a DSC VHF, in which case an MMSI number will then be issued.

2: If you haven't a ships licence then apply for one, again as a DSC VHF. It's free!!

You will also need to redo your Operators certificate for DSC.

Re: What\'s my MMSI number?

You need to get a number when you apply for a radio licence from Ofcom. Then you enter it in the radio - follow the instructions very carefully and don't make a mistake, as you only usually get one shot - if you enter a wrong digit the radio usually has to go back to the makers to reprogram.

Re: What\'s my MMSI number?

Thanks malcb and john for comprehensive answers. My licence is current so have now amended it to DSC on the ofcom site - their immediate update means I now have an MMSI number. Cheers for the info
Will ring them tomorrow re the ITU list

I understand - it's an age problem. I can never remember mine either - nor my mobile number for that matter. Best thing to do is to look it up and write it on your hand in biro. Works every time. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Icom isn t as bad as that... Get your number from ICOM then follow the manual and in the DSC menu there is a heading enter MMSI. if you get a digit wrong just go back to it and change it as the number isnt acceppted till you confirm it is totally correct. Up to that point you can change a digit or rewrite it. No panic...
